Toxic Screening: Why It Matters More Than Ever?

It is natural to want to avoid toxins as much as possible. However, the reality is that people are exposed to potentially harmful substances every day through the air they breathe, the food and water they consume, and substances that come into contact with the skin.

Since the Industrial Revolution began around 1760, the widespread use of fossil fuels, chemicals, and industrial manufacturing processes has increased environmental pollution. Contaminants have entered the soil, water, air, and atmosphere, contributing to the accumulation of harmful substances throughout the environment.

In Thailand, concerns about toxic exposure include its possible effects on several body systems, such as:

๐ The respiratory system

๐ The circulatory system

๐ The digestive system

๐ The body’s natural detoxification processes

Vital organs such as the lungs, heart, and brain may be particularly vulnerable. Long-term exposure to certain contaminants may increase health risks, interfere with childhood development, and affect the well-being of future generations.

Studies have also reported the presence of microplastics in human tissues, including tissues associated with pregnancy. These findings highlight how environmental contaminants may reach the body even before birth.

Seasonal PM2.5 air pollution in Thailand is another reminder of how frequently people may be exposed to potentially harmful airborne particles.

The Body’s Natural Detoxification System

The human body has natural systems for processing and eliminating unwanted substances.

This process uses enzymes, biomolecules, and specific nutrients to transform toxins into forms that can be removed through different organs and pathways, including:

๐ The lungs through exhalation

๐ The liver through bile production

๐ The intestines through stool

๐ The kidneys through urine

However, detoxification efficiency varies between individuals. Genetic differences, nutritional status, lifestyle, health conditions, and the amount of exposure may all influence how effectively the body processes and removes certain substances.

As a result, two people exposed to similar environmental conditions may have different levels of toxin accumulation.

Why Can Detecting Toxins Be Difficult?

Many types of environmental contaminants can enter the body, but current medical testing can detect only a limited number of substances.

Toxins may travel through the blood and lymphatic systems before being distributed to different tissues. Certain substances may accumulate inside cells, particularly fat cells, rather than remaining continuously detectable in the bloodstream.

For this reason, a blood test may not always provide a complete picture of long-term tissue accumulation.

A low or undetectable blood level does not necessarily confirm that no substance is stored elsewhere in the body. Conversely, a high blood level may indicate recent exposure, ongoing exposure, or a greater burden within the tissues.

Urine testing provides different information. It may show which substances or metabolites the body is eliminating at the time the sample is collected.

Toxicity Detection Methods Recommended by Medtopia

Medtopia recommends several assessment methods designed to evaluate different aspects of environmental exposure, mineral balance, metabolism, and cellular damage.

1. OligoScan

Tissue Mineral and Heavy Metal Analysis

OligoScan is a non-invasive method designed to estimate certain minerals and heavy metals in tissues using spectrophotometry.

During the test, light is directed onto the palm. The device measures reflected wavelengths associated with substances within the tissue.

The assessment is described as measuring:

๐ Approximately 14 heavy metals

๐ More than 20 minerals

The results may be used to identify possible mineral imbalances or the accumulation of certain metals within tissues.

What Information May OligoScan Provide?

The results are intended to provide information about:

๐ The body’s potential detoxification capacity

Excessive exposure to certain metals may contribute to oxidative stress and interfere with normal cellular function. Possible associated concerns may include:

The results may help doctors plan nutritional support and strategies aimed at improving mineral balance or reducing exposure to heavy metals.

Limitations of OligoScan

OligoScan is not generally repeated within short intervals to monitor treatment progress.

Because heavy metals stored in tissues may be eliminated slowly, Medtopia recommends waiting approximately two years before repeating the assessment after a detoxification programme.

2. Urine Organic Profile

Urinary Organic Compound Analysis

Substances entering the body-including nutrients, medications, and environmental chemicals-undergo metabolic processes within cells.

They are transformed into metabolites before being eliminated through:

๐ Shed skin cells

๐ Lymphatic fluid

Urine collection is one of the simplest and most convenient methods for analysing these metabolic by-products.

The Urine Organic Profile does not primarily assess heavy metals. It may identify metabolites associated with substances such as:

Unlike some tissue-based assessments, the Urine Organic Profile may be repeated within a shorter period to monitor changes.

Depending on the treatment plan, follow-up testing may be performed after approximately three months or at a later interval recommended by the doctor.

3. Urine 8-OHdG

Assessment of Oxidative DNA Damage

Radiation is one factor that may damage DNA within exposed cells. The degree of damage depends on several factors, including:

๐ The type of radiation

๐ The body’s ability to repair DNA

The Caesium-137 Incident in Thailand

In March 2023, a caesium-137 cylinder was reported missing from a steam power plant in the 304 Industrial Estate in Prachinburi, Thailand.

The material was later found to have been melted during a recycling process. Damage to its protective steel casing raised concerns about possible environmental contamination and occupational exposure.

The exact extent of exposure and the number of individuals potentially affected were not immediately clear.

How Does the 8-OHdG Test Work?

When DNA is damaged by oxidative stress, the DNA base guanine may be altered into 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine, commonly abbreviated as 8-OHdG.

The damaged material is removed from the cell, filtered by the kidneys, and excreted in the urine.

Urinary 8-OHdG levels may therefore be used as a marker of oxidative DNA damage.

Higher levels may indicate greater oxidative stress or DNA damage. However, elevated 8-OHdG is not specific to radiation exposure and may also be found in association with:

๐ Chronic inflammation

๐ Environmental toxin exposure

๐ Smoking

๐ Certain cancers

๐ Conditions associated with increased oxidative stress

The result should therefore be interpreted together with medical history, symptoms, lifestyle factors, and other laboratory findings.
