Thailand to Host 20th Global Wellness Summit in Phuket, Advancing Ambition as Global Wellness Hub

Thailand is preparing to host the 20th Global Wellness Summit (GWS 2026) in Phuket from November 10 - 13, 2026, bringing global wellness leaders, investors, academics and healthcare professionals to the country as Thailand seeks to strengthen its position as a leading global wellness destination.

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health, together with executives from the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) and eight partner organizations, announced the country’s readiness to host the international summit under the theme “The Science, Art and Soul of Wellness.”

The 20th anniversary edition of the Global Wellness Summit will take place at Angsana Laguna Phuket, with Thailand aiming to use the event as a platform to bring its traditional health wisdom to a global audience while connecting wellness with science, technology, investment and international business opportunities.

Thailand Targets a Greater Role in the Global Wellness Economy

Thailand’s Minister of Public Health, Pattana Promphat, said Thailand’s selection as host of GWS 2026 reflects international confidence in the country’s potential as a leading health and wellness destination.

According to the latest data cited from the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness economy was valued at US$6.8 trillion in 2024, equivalent to more than THB230 trillion.

Thailand ranked as the world’s 24th largest wellness market, with an economy valued at approximately US$42.7 billion, or THB1.45 trillion, representing growth of 10.1%.

Thailand’s wellness tourism sector also ranked 15th globally, highlighting the country’s growing position within the international wellness economy.

The Thai government plans to leverage Phuket’s position as a major international tourism destination to attract high-end travelers and potential investors, increase average spending per trip, encourage investment and generate broader economic benefits.

Three Pillars to Drive Thailand’s Wellness Economy

Hosting GWS 2026 forms part of Thailand’s broader ambition to develop the country into a Global Wellness Hub, with the government focusing on three major areas of impact.

The first is economic development, including increasing the value of Thai herbal products, traditional Thai massage, wellness products and health services, while encouraging spending by wellness travelers and distributing economic opportunities to local communities.

The second is soft power, with Thailand seeking to expand international recognition of Thai traditional medicine and alternative medicine through scientific evidence, innovation and international standards, particularly in preventive healthcare and longevity.

The third is the development of a comprehensive wellness ecosystem, connecting stakeholders across the value chain — from herbal producers and spa and wellness operators to clinics, healthcare facilities and international partners.

The approach is intended to strengthen the competitiveness and long-term sustainability of Thailand’s wellness industry.

Thai Wisdom Meets Science and Technology

Thailand is also developing its wellness economy around three strategic pillars: integrating traditional wisdom with science and technology; advancing services toward international standards and a high-value economy; and supporting commercialization and exports.

The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine is advancing area-based wellness development through the Thai Wellness Destination (TWD) initiative, while upgrading businesses toward the concept of Thai Identity Wellness Centers and developing model communities through the Thai Wellness Community (TWC) programme.

These initiatives are intended to create greater economic value from Thai herbs, traditional medicine and local wisdom while strengthening their connection with modern healthcare, research and innovation.

Public health authorities expect GWS 2026 to provide an important platform connecting Thailand with global wellness leaders and investors, potentially generating further investment, high-value tourism and long-term economic opportunities.

Why the Global Wellness Summit Chose Thailand

Susie Ellis, CEO of the Global Wellness Institute, highlighted Thailand’s combination of longstanding wellness traditions and its growing medical and preventive health capabilities.

The event is expected to facilitate international collaboration, investment and global health networks while supporting Thailand’s long-term ambition to become a sustainable medical and wellness hub in the region.

20th Global Wellness Summit to Bring International Leaders to Phuket

The Global Wellness Summit is an international gathering of leaders and decision-makers shaping the global wellness economy.

Its 20th anniversary edition will be held in Phuket from November 10–13, 2026, with support from Thai co-hosts including the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), Tourism Authority of Thailand (Amazing Thailand), and Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, Ministry of Public Health.

The summit will feature a range of formats, including panel discussions, general sessions, breakout sessions and hosted dining conversations, allowing participants to engage with emerging issues and developments across the global wellness industry.

The programme is designed to evolve in response to current global developments, industry trends and the expertise and interests of participating leaders.
