8 Warning Signs During Pregnancy: When to Go to the Hospital

1.Severe Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is a common and natural part of pregnancy. Symptoms may include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, cravings for certain foods (such as sour foods), cravings for non-food items, and increased sensitivity to smells.

However, if the symptoms become severe—such as being unable to eat, significant weight loss, or dehydration—it can negatively affect the mother’s health. It may also indicate abnormal conditions such as molar pregnancy or multiple pregnancy (twins). In such cases, medical evaluation is necessary, and some patients may require intravenous fluids.

2.Vaginal Bleeding

 - First trimester: Vaginal bleeding may be caused by various conditions, including miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Immediate medical evaluation is necessary to determine the cause and assess the fetus.

 - Second and third trimesters: Bleeding may result from serious conditions such as placenta previa or placental abruption, which can be dangerous for both mother and baby. It may also be a sign of impending labor.

3.Lower Abdominal Pain

Mild lower abdominal pain in early pregnancy can occur due to uterine expansion and usually improves with rest or changing position. However, severe or persistent pain should be evaluated by a doctor.

4.High Fever

Pregnant women with a high fever should seek medical care to determine the cause, such as infections in different body systems. Self-medication should be avoided, as some drugs are unsafe during pregnancy. Certain infections may affect fetal development or increase the risk of preterm labor.

5.Reduced or Absent Fetal Movement

Monitoring fetal movement after around 5 months of pregnancy is important. If the baby’s movements decrease significantly or stop, it may indicate fetal distress or risk of intrauterine death, and immediate medical attention is required.

6.Labor Pain

True labor pain involves:

 - Uterine contractions (abdominal tightening)

 - Pain radiating to the lower back or pelvic area

 - Regular, increasing frequency and intensity

 - No relief with rest or position changes

If these symptoms occur before 37 weeks, there is a risk of preterm labor.

7.Water Breaking (Rupture of Membranes)

This presents as a continuous flow of clear fluid from the vagina, similar to urine but uncontrollable. It is a sign of labor, and immediate hospital care is required.

8.Swelling, Rapid Weight Gain, Epigastric Pain, Blurred Vision, Severe Headache

These symptoms may indicate Preeclampsia, a serious condition that can be dangerous for both mother and baby. Immediate medical evaluation is essential if these symptoms occur.
