Depression in Older Adults: A Mental Health Condition That Should Not Be Overlooked

Many times, Thai society holds misconceptions about older adults. People often believe that individuals aged 60 years and above, who are typically in the retirement stage, are living a relaxed and carefree life. This assumption arises because they have completed many responsibilities, including professional duties and family obligations. In addition, older adults are often perceived as individuals who have experienced many challenges in life and therefore should not easily feel distress or emotional discomfort.

However, current research studies suggest that this perspective is misleading. Older adulthood is actually a stage that requires significant adjustment, mainly due to the decline in physical health. This deterioration may require older individuals to modify their lifestyles in order to adapt to new physical limitations. Furthermore, older adults may face loss and separation, such as the passing of close friends or loved ones, which commonly occurs with aging. For many older individuals, the reduction of roles and responsibilities they once held can lead to feelings of emptiness. This may cause them to question their own self-worth and feel uncertain about their surroundings, leading to anxiety and discouragement when thinking about the future. These negative perspectives and emotional states can be warning signs of depression.

Signs of depression can also be observed through various changes in an older person’s behavior and emotional state. These may include an increase in negative emotions, feelings of unhappiness, loss of interest in activities or hobbies that they previously enjoyed, and a reduction in participation in daily activities. Such changes can lead to passivity and withdrawal. Additionally, depression may affect sleeping and eating patterns, causing individuals to sleep or eat either more or less than usual. These changes often impair cognitive functions, such as the ability to perceive, remember, and process information. The efficiency of problem-solving and decision-making may also decline. As a result, older adults may experience decreased confidence and a reduced sense of self-worth. In some cases, they may hesitate to interact with others, leading to feelings of isolation and increased negative self-perception, which further elevates the risk of depression.

If you notice that an older adult close to you may be experiencing depression, research has clearly shown that there are several effective approaches that can help restore their mental well-being. The first step is to consult a qualified professional for a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether the individual is indeed experiencing depression. If diagnosed, treatment may involve not only medication but also psychological interventions that can effectively alleviate depressive symptoms.

These interventions may include cognitive restructuring, which helps individuals adjust negative thought patterns and has been shown to be effective for older adults just as it is for other age groups. Establishing new social relationships can also help compensate for relationships that may have been lost. Additionally, encouraging participation in meaningful activities can help older adults regain a sense of self-worth and purpose, bringing renewed vitality to their lives.

These therapeutic approaches therefore represent important strategies that can help alleviate depression among older adults.

At what age should you start Ulthera (Ultherapy) ?

Ulthera (Ultherapy) is typically recommended when early signs of skin laxity or collagen loss begin to appear. On average, this usually occurs around the age of 30 and above, as this is when collagen starts to decline more noticeably. At this stage, the skin structure gradually becomes thinner, the facial contour may begin to lose definition, and areas such as the cheeks may start to sag.
