So I've been dealing with some lower back and knee issues for a while now. I'm 42, been living in Bangkok for about 3 years, and honestly I think years of sitting at a desk plus some questionable decisions playing football on weekends have finally caught up with me.

The back thing started maybe 6 months ago - dull ache that comes and goes, sometimes shoots down my left leg. My knee has been clicking and swelling on and off since like... November? I went to a local clinic near my condo and the doctor basically said "you need to see an orthopedic specialist, probably get an MRI" and sent me on my way.

So now I'm trying to figure out which hospital in Thailand actually makes sense for this kind of thing. I know the obvious names - Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital - but tbh every time I've been to Bumrungrad it felt like checking into a hotel and the bill reflected that lol. Like I don't need marble floors, I need someone who knows spines.

I've been looking around and a friend mentioned Vibhavadi Hospital, said their ortho department was decent and way more reasonable price-wise. He had some kind of knee surgery there last year and seemed happy with it. Has anyone else been there for joint/spine stuff? I looked them up and they seem to have a pretty established orthopedics center but I honestly can't tell how much of that is marketing vs reality.

What I'm really looking for:

• ⁠An orthopedic specialist who actually takes time to explain things (not just "here, get surgery")

• ⁠Decent diagnostic imaging - I'll probably need MRI at minimum

• ⁠Reasonable pricing, or at least transparent about costs upfront

• ⁠Experience dealing with expats / English-speaking staff

I have Cigna insurance but honestly not sure what they'll cover for this so I might end up paying out of pocket for at least some of it.

Anyone been through something similar? Which hospital did you end up going with and how was the experience? I'm especially curious if anyone's had spinal issues diagnosed and treated here - like did you feel confident in the diagnosis or did you get a second opinion?
