A Complete Guide to Orthodontic Treatment: Steps and Everything Important You Need to Know

Orthodontic treatment is not only about improving the appearance of your teeth; it also helps correct oral health issues and bite alignment problems.

For anyone considering orthodontic treatment, this article outlines the complete process of getting braces, along with detailed guidance on how to care for yourself both before and after orthodontic treatment, so that your treatment journey can proceed smoothly and deliver the best possible results.

How to Prepare Yourself Before Getting Braces

Before starting orthodontic treatment, there are several important preparations that can help ensure the process is effective and smooth:

   - Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth properly and flossing regularly.

   - Visit a dentist for an oral examination to treat any cavities or gum disease before beginning orthodontic treatment.

   - Learn about different types of orthodontic treatments so you can choose the option that best suits your needs.

   - Prepare an adequate budget, as orthodontic treatment usually requires a long-term commitment and ongoing costs.

   - Plan your schedule so you can attend regular dental appointments as recommended by your orthodontist.

What Are the 7 Steps of Orthodontic Treatment?

The 7 Main Steps of Orthodontic TreatmentOrthodontic treatment consists of seven important stages. Each stage requires different levels of detail and time. The entire treatment process usually takes 1–3 years, depending on the complexity of the dental problem and the type of orthodontic method used. Let’s take a closer look at these seven steps.

1. Consultation with an Orthodontist

The orthodontic process begins with a consultation with a specialist orthodontist who will evaluate your dental condition and determine whether orthodontic treatment is suitable. The dentist will explain the treatment plan, estimated duration, costs, and how to care for your teeth during treatment. They will also answer any questions you may have. Choosing an experienced orthodontist and a reputable clinic is essential for achieving successful results.

2. Oral Health Examination

At this stage, the dentist will perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums. This may include taking intraoral photographs, dental impressions to create study models, and dental X-rays to examine the jawbone structure and tooth roots. These records help the orthodontist analyze your condition and design an appropriate treatment plan. The dentist may also detect issues that need to be treated before orthodontic treatment begins, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or impacted wisdom teeth.

3. Selecting the Orthodontic Method and Treatment Plan

After evaluating your oral health, the dentist will recommend a treatment plan and present different orthodontic options, such as traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, Damon braces, or clear aligners (Invisalign). You can discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each option with your dentist to determine which method best suits your condition. The dentist will also determine whether tooth extraction is necessary, depending on your dental structure and treatment goals.

4. Preparing the Oral Cavity

Before placing orthodontic appliances, the dentist will ensure that the oral cavity is in good condition. This may include scaling to remove tartar, treating cavities, managing gum disease, or extracting certain teeth if necessary. This preparation stage is essential to ensure that orthodontic treatment proceeds smoothly and helps prevent complications such as tooth decay or gum inflammation during treatment.

5. Placement of Orthodontic Appliances

Once the mouth is ready, the orthodontist will install the orthodontic appliances according to the selected treatment method. For metal or ceramic braces, brackets are attached to each tooth and connected with an orthodontic wire that gradually moves the teeth into the desired position. For clear aligners, a series of removable transparent trays is used to gradually shift the teeth. After the appliances are placed, the dentist will provide instructions on how to care for them properly.

6. Regular Follow-up Appointments

During orthodontic treatment, patients must attend regular follow-up appointments so the dentist can monitor progress and adjust the appliances. For metal or ceramic braces, appointments are typically scheduled once a month to adjust the wires and replace elastic bands. For clear aligners, follow-up visits usually occur every 6–8 weeks to receive the next set of aligners. Attending these appointments is essential to ensure that treatment progresses as planned.

7. Removal of Orthodontic Appliances

Once the teeth have moved into the desired position, the orthodontist will remove the braces. After removal, the dentist will provide a retainer, which helps maintain the new tooth alignment and prevents the teeth from shifting back to their original positions. Retainers can be removable or fixed. The duration of retainer use depends on the dentist’s recommendation. Some patients may need to wear retainers for an extended period or even long-term. Failure to wear a retainer as advised may cause teeth to shift again, potentially requiring additional orthodontic treatment.

Post-Orthodontic Care

Proper care after orthodontic treatment is essential to maintain the beautiful results long-term. The following guidelines are recommended:

   - Wear your retainer strictly according to your dentist’s instructions to prevent teeth from shifting.

   - Brush and floss regularly to maintain good oral hygiene.

   - Visit your dentist every 6 months for routine oral health check-ups.

   - Avoid hard or sticky foods that could damage your retainer.

   - Limit sugary foods and drinks to prevent tooth decay.

   - Carry your retainer and its case when traveling to prevent loss or damage.

   - If your retainer becomes damaged or lost, consult your dentist promptly to have it replaced.

At what age should you start Ulthera (Ultherapy) ?

Ulthera (Ultherapy) is typically recommended when early signs of skin laxity or collagen loss begin to appear. On average, this usually occurs around the age of 30 and above, as this is when collagen starts to decline more noticeably. At this stage, the skin structure gradually becomes thinner, the facial contour may begin to lose definition, and areas such as the cheeks may start to sag.

Depression in Older Adults: A Mental Health Condition That Should Not Be Overlooked

Many times, Thai society holds misconceptions about older adults. People often believe that individuals aged 60 years and above, who are typically in the retirement stage, are living a relaxed and carefree life. This assumption arises because they have completed many responsibilities, including professional duties and family obligations. In addition, older adults are often perceived as individuals who have experienced many challenges in life and therefore should not easily feel distress or emotional discomfort.
