Behind the Surgery: Getting to Know Dr. Tanongsak Panyawirunroj of Asia Cosmetic Hospital

When people think of plastic surgery, they often focus first on what can be seen after a procedure the shape of the face, the nose, the eyes, the breasts, or the contours of the body. Yet behind every visible change lies a far more complex process involving anatomical knowledge, surgical experience, patient assessment, and a series of medical decisions made before, during, and after surgery.

This is why getting to know a plastic surgeon should involve more than asking, “What procedures does the doctor perform?”

It is equally important to understand the path that shaped the surgeon’s expertise, the foundations of their medical training, and how those experiences influence the way they assess and care for patients.

Dr. Tanongsak Panyawirunroj, M.D. is a plastic surgeon whose specialist qualifications are recognized by the Medical Council of Thailand in both Surgery and Plastic Surgery. He is also the founder and Managing Director of Asia Cosmetic Hospital in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

His medical career began in 1998 and has developed through several stages from general medical practice to general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and further international training in craniofacial surgery, aesthetic surgery, pediatric plastic surgery, and advanced rhinoplasty.

The path that eventually led to the establishment of Asia Cosmetic Hospital is therefore not simply the story of founding a cosmetic surgery hospital. It is also the story of a surgeon whose professional development has been built through years of surgical education, clinical experience, and continued training across multiple areas of plastic surgery.

His Career Did Not Begin in Cosmetic Surgery

Dr. Tanongsak graduated from the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University in 1998 and began practicing medicine in the same year.

His early career was not in a cosmetic surgery setting. From 1998 to 2001, he worked as a general practitioner in Phang Nga Province. He later served in an acting leadership role at Koh Yao Noi Community Hospital from 2001 to 2002.

These early years placed him within the broader healthcare system, where patient care was not limited to elective procedures or aesthetic concerns.

In 2002, he returned to Siriraj Hospital to enter residency training in General Surgery, completing his board training in 2005.

He then continued into Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, receiving his specialist qualification in 2007.

This sequence is important in understanding his professional background. Before working with shape, proportion, and aesthetics, his medical foundation was built first on surgery itself.

From Surgery to Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is not simply the medical practice of changing appearance.

Its foundations also involve tissue management, structural reconstruction, wound healing, anatomical relationships, and an understanding of how bone, muscle, fat, skin, blood vessels, and soft tissue interact.

In addition to his qualifications in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, Dr. Tanongsak completed further training in Microsurgery at Rajavithi Hospital in 2006, followed by training in AO Maxillofacial Surgery in 2007.

These experiences added further layers to his surgical background from broad surgical principles to more detailed work involving tissue, facial structures, and fine anatomical relationships.

By the time his career had developed fully into plastic surgery, aesthetics was no longer separate from structure. It was built upon it.

Learning Facial Structure Through Training in Taiwan, Canada, and South Korea

After completing his specialist training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2007, Dr. Tanongsak continued to pursue additional training overseas.

One of the key stages was further training in Craniofacial Surgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, an area that involves complex anatomical relationships between the skull, facial bones, jaw structures, and soft tissue.

In 2008, he traveled to Canada for further exposure to aesthetic surgery at the Landing Surgical Centre in Nova Scotia and pediatric plastic surgery at IWK Health Centre in Halifax.

Later, in 2012, he undertook further training in Advanced Rhinoplasty at JW in Seoul, South Korea.

Taken together, these experiences show a professional path that was not built around a single procedure or technique. Instead, his training has spanned general surgery, tissue management, craniofacial surgery, aesthetic surgery, pediatric plastic surgery, and advanced nasal surgery.

From the Face to the Breasts and Body: A Multidimensional Scope of Expertise

As knowledge from different phases of training is applied to clinical practice, plastic surgery naturally extends beyond a single part of the body.

Dr. Tanongsak’s published areas of expertise include Cheekbone Reduction, Jaw Reduction, V-Line Surgery, Chin Implant, Rhinoplasty, Revision Rhinoplasty, Double Eyelid Surgery, Breast Augmentation, Breast Revision, as well as work related to Body Contouring and Gender Affirmation Surgery.

But beyond the names of these procedures, there is a common principle that connects them: the relationship between what a patient hopes to change and what is appropriate for that patient’s anatomy.

In facial surgery, for example, changing one structure may affect the overall balance of the face. The nose, chin, jawline, and cheekbones therefore should not always be viewed as entirely separate elements.

Breast surgery and body contouring involve a different set of considerations, including breast structure, tissue volume, skin elasticity, fat distribution, body weight, and changes associated with pregnancy, aging, or weight loss.

This is why the idea of an “individualized approach” should not simply be a marketing phrase. In surgery, it reflects a fundamental part of preoperative assessment.

The Face Is Not a Collection of Separate Parts

Facial surgery is one of the clearest examples of why anatomical relationships matter.

The nose, chin, jaw, and cheekbones all contribute to facial proportion. Changing one structure can alter how the entire face is perceived.

Dr. Tanongsak’s background in Craniofacial Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, and Advanced Rhinoplasty is particularly relevant to areas listed within his clinical scope, including cheekbone reduction, jaw reduction, V-Line contouring, chin augmentation, primary rhinoplasty, and revision rhinoplasty.

However, having access to multiple surgical techniques does not mean that every patient needs multiple procedures.

A key part of surgical assessment is determining what may be appropriate, what may be unnecessary, and what extent of change is suitable for the individual anatomy.

Facelift: Facial Rejuvenation Is Not About Giving Everyone the Same Face

One of the important surgical service categories at Asia Cosmetic Hospital is Facelift Surgery.

Facial aging does not occur only at the surface of the skin. It is also associated with changes in deeper soft tissues, facial fat, supporting structures, and the neck.

This means that patterns of facial aging can look very different from one person to another.

For some patients, the most noticeable changes may be along the lower face and jawline. For others, laxity may extend into the neck or occur together with changes in facial volume and soft tissue.

A facelift consultation therefore needs to go beyond the question, “How many years younger do I want to look?”

The surgeon must consider where the changes are occurring, the underlying facial structure, the degree of tissue laxity, and the extent of surgery that may be appropriate.

The objective is not to create the same face for every patient, but to plan rejuvenation within the context of each person’s existing anatomy.

Revision Surgery: When the Starting Point Is No Longer the Original Anatomy

Another important area within Dr. Tanongsak’s published clinical scope is Revision Rhinoplasty and Breast Revision.

Revision surgery differs from a first-time operation because the surgeon is no longer working only with the original anatomy.

Previous surgery may have altered tissue planes, created scar tissue, changed structural support, or introduced implants or other materials. These factors may affect both what can be done and how a revision should be planned.

In revision rhinoplasty, for example, a previously operated nose may differ significantly from a nose that has never undergone surgery.

Similarly, breast revision requires consideration of the original procedure, the current condition of the tissue, any existing implants, and the specific reason for revision.

The planning process therefore begins by understanding what has already been done before deciding what should be done next.

Breast Surgery and Mommy Makeover: Understanding a Changing Body

Another major area of plastic surgery is Breast Surgery and Body Contouring.

Asia Cosmetic Hospital provides procedures in this category including Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, other forms of breast surgery, as well as Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, and Mommy Makeover.

The term Mommy Makeover does not refer to a single operation. Rather, it describes a tailored surgical plan that may address physical changes associated with pregnancy and childbirth, such as changes in breast shape, abdominal skin laxity, or altered body contour.

But these changes are not the same for every patient.

Some individuals may be mainly concerned with the breasts. Others may have excess abdominal skin. Some may have both localized fat and tissue laxity affecting several areas.

Breast lift, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and liposuction are therefore not interchangeable procedures. Each is designed to address a different anatomical concern.

This is why surgical consultation should come before choosing a procedure by name.

A service list can show what may be available, but examination and assessment are what help determine what may actually be appropriate for the individual.

Gender Affirmation Surgery: A Surgical Journey That Requires Structured Planning

Another area included within Dr. Tanongsak’s professional scope is Gender Affirmation Surgery.

These procedures differ from many conventional aesthetic operations because they often require a more structured care pathway, including preoperative evaluation, preparation, surgical planning, postoperative recovery, and longer-term follow-up.

For international patients, travel planning also becomes part of the medical journey.

The length of stay in Thailand, postoperative appointments, recovery before long-haul travel, and follow-up after returning home may all need to be considered before surgery.

This is a clear example of why surgery does not begin and end in the operating room.

It is a process that extends from preparation through recovery.

From Plastic Surgeon to Founder of Asia Cosmetic Hospital

The year 2012 marked another important stage in Dr. Tanongsak’s career.

In addition to founding and serving as Managing Director of Asian Medical Device, he also became the founder and Managing Director of Asia Cosmetic Hospital, a role he continues to hold.

This expanded his professional story beyond the work of an individual surgeon.

It also connected his experience to the development of a healthcare facility specifically focused on plastic and aesthetic surgery.

Located on Rattanathibet Road in Nonthaburi, Thailand, Asia Cosmetic Hospital provides services across multiple areas of plastic surgery, including facial surgery, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, breast surgery, body contouring, and other procedures within the hospital’s scope of care.

In this context, Dr. Tanongsak’s professional identity is closely connected with the development of Asia Cosmetic Hospital because he is not simply one of the surgeons practicing there. He is also one of the people behind the creation and development of the institution itself.

A Surgeon Does Not Work Alone

Although the surgeon’s experience is central to an operation, surgery is never carried out by one person alone.

A surgical journey may involve preoperative assessment, medical screening, anesthesiology, nursing care, operating room teams, infection control, postoperative monitoring, and follow-up.

For this reason, choosing a surgeon should also involve considering the hospital and the clinical system surrounding that surgeon.

This is particularly important for procedures that are complex or require general anesthesia.

The clinical environment, preparation process, medical support, and postoperative care all form part of the treatment pathway.

More Than 25 Years in Medical Practice

Dr. Tanongsak has practiced medicine since 1998, giving him more than 25 years of professional medical experience.

But the number of years alone tells only part of the story.

What is equally important is how those years have been used.

His path has moved from general practice in Phang Nga to surgical residency at Siriraj Hospital; from General Surgery to Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; from Microsurgery and Maxillofacial Surgery to Craniofacial Surgery in Taiwan; from aesthetic and pediatric plastic surgery training in Canada to Advanced Rhinoplasty in South Korea.

Each stage did not replace what came before it.

Instead, it added another layer to his understanding of surgery.

From Thailand to International Professional Networks

Beyond medical education and surgical training, Dr. Tanongsak’s professional background also includes participation in international plastic surgery networks.

His published profile lists professional representation and membership in several international plastic surgery organizations.

In 2017, he became an International Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

This distinction should be clearly separated from the term “American Board Certification.”

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is a professional organization, while board certification is a separate credentialing process.

Presenting professional status accurately is particularly important when medical information is intended for both Thai and international audiences.

Two Specialist Qualifications Recognized by the Medical Council of Thailand

For patients who wish to verify a doctor’s specialist status, official professional recognition is particularly important.

According to his published professional information, Dr. Tanongsak Panyawirunroj holds specialist qualifications recognized by the Medical Council of Thailand in two areas:

๐ Surgery
๐ Plastic Surgery

Patients may independently verify physician information through the Medical Council of Thailand’s doctor verification system.

For medical content, this type of verifiable information is more meaningful than promotional descriptions because it allows patients to check professional credentials through an external official source.

Standards of Care Begin Before the Day of Surgery

Looking across Dr. Tanongsak’s career, one principle becomes clear: surgery does not begin on the day a patient enters the operating room.

The process starts much earlier.

A surgeon needs to consider anatomy, medical history, underlying conditions, medications and supplements, previous operations, patient expectations, and the limitations and risks of the proposed procedure.

For revision patients, details about earlier operations, implants, materials used, or previous complications can be especially important.

The standard of care should therefore not be measured only by the question, “Can this procedure be performed?”

It should also include:

Should it be performed?

What approach may be appropriate?

Does the patient understand the benefits, limitations, alternatives, and potential risks sufficiently to make an informed decision?

Behind the Surgery: More Than Aesthetic Change

From working as a general practitioner in Phang Nga in 1998 to training in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery at Siriraj Hospital; from craniofacial training in Taiwan and aesthetic and pediatric plastic surgery exposure in Canada to advanced rhinoplasty training in South Korea; and eventually to the founding of Asia Cosmetic Hospital, the career of Dr. Tanongsak Panyawirunroj places the idea of cosmetic surgery within a much broader context.

Before changing what can be seen on the outside, a surgeon must understand what lies beneath.

Before choosing a technique, there must be an understanding of anatomy.

Before entering the operating room, there must be an assessment of suitability.

And before discussing results, patients need to understand the possibilities, limitations, and risks involved in treatment.

For anyone considering plastic surgery, the important question may therefore not be only:

“What would I like to change?”

It may also be:

“What kind of professional path has my surgeon taken, and how well does that background support the decisions that need to be made before, during, and after surgery?”
