"Children's Meningitis" is a serious disease that parents should not ignore

 

Meningitis in Children (Meningitis) is a severe and potentially life-threatening infectious disease commonly found in young children, especially infants and children under 5 years old. If not treated promptly, it can lead to serious complications such as brain damage or death. Therefore, parents and caregivers should have knowledge and understanding of this disease for prevention and timely treatment. 

 

What is Meningitis in Children? 

 

Meningitis is the inflammation of the meninges and spinal cord, caused by viral, bacterial, or fungal infections. Bacterial infections are more severe and dangerous than viral infections. 

 

Causes of Meningitis in Children 

 

1. Viruses such as enteroviruses, measles virus, mumps, chickenpox 

2. Bacteria such as Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae 

3. Fungi are rare and usually occur in children with weakened immune systems 

 

Symptoms of Meningitis in Children 

 

Symptoms may vary depending on age and the causative pathogen. Key symptoms include 

๐ High fever 

๐ Headache 

๐ Stiff neck (pain when bending the neck) 

๐ Vomiting 

๐ Lethargy, poor feeding, or unusual crying (especially in infants) 

๐ Seizures 

๐ In some cases, skin petechiae may be present (especially in severe bacterial infections) 

 

Diagnosis and Treatment 

 

Diagnosis 

Doctors will take a medical history, perform a physical examination, and may draw blood and cerebrospinal fluid to identify the causative pathogen. 

 

Treatment 

๐ Bacterial infection: requires prompt intravenous antibiotic treatment 

๐ Viral infection: is usually treated symptomatically with close monitoring 

๐ Fungal infection: is treated with appropriate antifungal medications 

๐​ In some cases, treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU)

Prevention of Meningitis in Children 

 

๐​ Receive important vaccines such as meningococcal vaccines (MenACWY, MenB), Hib vaccine (Hib), pneumococcal vaccine, measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR) 

๐ Avoid contact with infected individuals 

๐ Maintain hygiene, such as frequent handwashing 

๐ If a child shows abnormal symptoms such as high fever, lethargy, seizures, or skin petechiae, seek medical attention immediately 

 

Advice for Parents 

 

๐ If your child has a high fever, lethargy, vomiting, stiff neck, or neurological symptoms, go to the hospital immediately 

๐ Do not ignore abnormal signs because meningitis can be severe and life-threatening 

๐ Vaccination is an important shield that helps reduce the risk of this disease 

 

Meningitis in children is a disease that requires vigilance and great attention because it can cause serious harm. If you suspect your child has abnormal symptoms, seek medical care immediately.
