A fatty mass or lipoma (lipoma) is a mass of fatty tissue that grows under the skin, commonly found in the neck, shoulders, back, or arms. The size of the mass is usually small and movable when touched, and it usually does not cause pain.
It is a tumor that occurs spontaneously without a specific cause, unrelated to eating fatty foods or fat accumulation. Some cases may involve many masses appearing across the entire body and can occur in all age groups, even found in newborns.
Signs that you should see a doctor
A mass develops in the neck, armpit, or breast area because it may be another type of tumor, not a subcutaneous lipoma. It could be a tumor of the breast, thyroid gland, or lymph nodes.
- The mass grows rapidly or is large in size.
- The mass feels hard or is accompanied by pain.
- The mass turns red in color.
