Five Methods for Preventing Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common illness among young children, particularly those attending childcare centers or kindergartens, where the virus can spread easily. The primary mode of transmission is direct contact with an infected person. To reduce the risk of infection, children should practice the following preventive measures:

1. Wash hands regularly - Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before meals, after using the toilet, and after touching shared objects.

2. Maintain personal and environmental hygiene - The viruses that cause HFMD can survive on surfaces. Frequently clean toys, tables, and commonly touched objects to reduce the spread of infection.

3. Avoid close contact with infected individuals - During outbreaks, avoid taking children to crowded places. If possible, keep them away from infected persons to minimize exposure.

4. Strengthen the immune system - Ensure children get adequate rest, eat nutritious foods, and drink enough water to help support their immune system.

5. Teach proper hygiene habits - Encourage children not to put their fingers, toys, or other objects into their mouths, and avoid sharing personal items.

If a child develops symptoms of HFMD, they should stop attending school immediately to prevent transmission and receive appropriate medical care.

Cause

HFMD is caused by viruses in the Enterovirus group. Several strains can cause the disease, most commonly Coxsackievirus A16, while Enterovirus 71 (EV71) may cause more severe symptoms and complications.

Transmission

- Direct contact: Through saliva, mucus, fluid from blisters, or the stool of an infected person.

- Indirect contact: Through contaminated objects or surfaces, such as toys and utensils.

Symptoms

- Fever, often high.

- Mouth ulcers causing pain and making it difficult to eat and drink (inside the cheeks, on the roof of the mouth, and on the tongue).

- Rash or blisters on the palms, soles, knees, elbows, and buttocks.

- In some cases, children may become irritable, cry frequently, and drool due to painful mouth sores.

Treatment

There is no specific cure for HFMD. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, including:

- Taking fever-reducing medication, such as paracetamol.

- Using topical medication to relieve pain from mouth ulcers as prescribed by a physician.

- Drinking plenty of fluids and eating soft foods that are easy to swallow, such as porridge, soup, or yogurt, to reduce irritation.

- Getting adequate rest to help the body recover.

Additional Preventive Measures

- Wash hands thoroughly: Before eating, after using the toilet, and after changing diapers for young children.

- Clean toys and household items: Regularly disinfect toys and items that children frequently touch.

- Separate personal belongings: Do not share utensils or personal items with others.

- Avoid crowded places: During outbreaks, avoid taking children to crowded areas.

- Keep infected children at home: Children with HFMD should stay home and rest until they recover to prevent spreading the infection to others, particularly at school.

Do not overlook snoring, it may risk sleep apnea

Have you ever had these symptoms? Snoring so loudly that the person next to you has to wake you up in the middle of the night, waking up in the morning not feeling refreshed, feeling unusually sleepy during the day, falling asleep easily while working, watching TV, or driving. Some people may experience sudden awakening, gasping for breath in the middle of the night, dry mouth, dry throat, morning headaches, or feeling exhausted throughout the day. These symptoms may seem like small matters, but they could actually be warning signs of sleep apnea.

7 Signs You Should Get a Sleep Test for Sleep Apnea

Snoring or poor sleep may seem normal, but in some cases they can be signs of sleep apnea, a condition that affects overall health and quality of life. If left untreated, it may cause chronic fatigue, daytime sleepiness, reduced concentration, and long-term health problems. A Sleep Test is an important method for evaluating abnormalities during sleep and helping healthcare providers develop an appropriate treatment plan.
