Mounjaro vs Wegovy Which weight loss medication is more effective?

Both Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are medications used in weight management clinics, along with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. However, recent head-to-head research comparing the two found that the “newer” medication appears to perform better in people who are overweight but do not have type 2 diabetes.
Clear Difference in Results
The study found that people using Mounjaro lost nearly 20% of their body weight, while those using Wegovy lost about 14%. The average waist circumference of people taking Mounjaro also decreased by approximately 5 centimeters more, showing a clear difference.
Why Is Mounjaro More Effective?
Both medications work in a similar way by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which helps slow stomach emptying and signals the brain that the body is full, resulting in reduced food intake. However, Mounjaro has an additional advantage because it mimics two hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, making it more effective at reducing appetite than using only one hormone.
Side Effects
Regardless of which medication is used, the most common side effects are similar, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In this study, about 6% of people taking Mounjaro discontinued treatment due to side effects, compared with 8% of those taking Wegovy, which is not a significant difference.
Important Considerations Before Deciding
Although this study is interesting, there are some important limitations. For example, the study was not blinded, meaning both the participants and researchers knew which medication was being used, which may have influenced the results. In addition, the participants had an average BMI of around 30 or 27 with obesity-related health conditions, so the findings may not apply to everyone. Another important point is that this study focused on weight loss, and there is currently no clear evidence that Mounjaro is better than Wegovy in reducing the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Summary
For people who are overweight, do not have diabetes, and are committed to improving their lifestyle through diet and exercise, Mounjaro may be a more effective option than Wegovy for weight loss. However, the choice of medication should always be based on a discussion with a healthcare professional, taking into account the benefits, side effects, and individual risks.
