TONSILLITIS

The tonsils are lymphatic tissues located on the sides of the mouth, at the base of the tongue, and behind the nasal cavity. Their function is to help trap germs that may enter the respiratory and digestive tracts. Common problems involving the tonsils include tonsillitis or significant enlargement of the tonsils, which can lead to blockage of the airway or difficulty swallowing.
Understanding Tonsillitis Symptoms
Symptoms of Acute Tonsillitis
Acute tonsillitis can occur in both children and adults, but it is most commonly found in children under 10 years old. It may be caused by either bacterial or viral infections. Patients often present with a high fever, headache, and severe pain when swallowing. In children, drooling or vomiting after eating may also occur. Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck may be felt as well. In some cases, if the inflammation spreads beyond the tonsils, it may lead to a peritonsillar abscess.
Symptoms of Chronic Tonsillitis
Chronic tonsillitis is characterized by frequent sore throats due to repeated inflammation, or enlarged tonsils that affect swallowing or breathing. It may also be associated with snoring or obstructive sleep apnea.
Treatment for Tonsillitis
1.Doctors usually provide treatment based on the symptoms, such as fever-reducing medication, medicine to relieve a sore throat, and mouthwash, which may help reduce the amount of bacteria. Gargling frequently with salt water (mixing ½ to 1 teaspoon of salt in one glass of warm water) can also help reduce germs in the mouth.
2.If the doctor determines that the condition is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics will be prescribed, and they should usually be taken continuously for at least 7-10 days. In cases where the symptoms are severe and the patient is unable to eat, hospitalization may be required so that intravenous fluids and antibiotics can be given.
If the patient experiences frequent tonsillitis several times a year, the doctor may consider surgical treatment.
Indications for Tonsillectomy
- Frequent inflammation of the tonsils several times a year for many consecutive years
- Severely enlarged tonsils causing airway obstruction, sleep apnea, or difficulty swallowing
- A previous peritonsillar abscess that required drainage; tonsillectomy should be scheduled after the inflammation has resolved
- Suspected tumor or cancer of the tonsils
- Other conditions, such as food debris or tonsil stones in the tonsils, causing difficulty swallowing
Advice and Important Information for Patients Undergoing Tonsillectomy
- Eat liquid or soft foods for about 1 week. Avoid hard or very hot foods, as they may increase throat pain and raise the risk of bleeding from the surgical wound
- Avoid forceful coughing or clearing of the throat
- Suck on ice frequently during the first 1–2 days after surgery
- Avoid excessive voice use during the first week, drink plenty of water, and get enough rest
