What Causes Wrinkles? How to Reduce and Treat Them

Wrinkles are a common issue that can occur in everyone, especially with frequent sun exposure and increasing age. As we get older, the skin loses collagen and elastin, resulting in reduced moisture, dryness, and the formation of wrinkles. The first area where wrinkles usually appear is around the eyes. If not properly cared for, wrinkles can become more numerous and more noticeable over time.

Causes of Facial Wrinkles

1. Aging

As age increases, the body produces fewer essential substances that help keep the skin firm and hydrated, such as elastin, hyaluronic acid, and collagen. This leads to reduced skin elasticity, causing sagging and the appearance of fine lines on the face, such as under-eye wrinkles.

2. Genetics

Each person develops wrinkles at different times, with varying depth and severity. This is because skin structure and the body’s ability to produce essential substances are influenced by genetics.

3. Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation

UV rays are one of the main causes of premature wrinkles and can make them deeper over time. UV radiation penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin and damages collagen, elastin, and skin fibers, weakening the skin and making it more prone to wrinkles.

4. Smoking and Alcohol Consumption

Smoking affects collagen production and accelerates aging, causing cells in the body to function less efficiently. Alcohol dehydrates the skin, leading to fine lines and wrinkles.

5. Repetitive Facial Movements

Facial expressions such as smiling, laughing, raising eyebrows, or frowning cause certain areas of the skin to fold repeatedly. If the skin loses elasticity, wrinkles will form. Repeated movements make wrinkles more visible and deeper over time.

Types of Wrinkles

Facial wrinkles can be divided into two types:

1. Static Wrinkles

These are permanent wrinkles caused by dryness, dehydration, aging, or environmental factors such as staying in air-conditioned environments for long periods, which can make the skin thin and wrinkled.

2. Dynamic Wrinkles

These occur due to muscle contractions, causing the dermis and epidermis to pull together and form lines. They are more common in people with very dry or oily skin.

Common Areas of Wrinkles on the Face

๐ Under-eye wrinkles: Including crow’s feet, easily noticeable because the skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate

๐ Forehead wrinkles: Caused by repeated facial movements and UV exposure, especially in those who do not use sunscreen

๐ Nasolabial folds: Deep lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth, often caused by facial expressions and skin sagging

๐ Neck wrinkles: Caused by loss of elasticity and reduced skin density

How to Reduce Wrinkles

1. Skincare Products

Anti-aging products should:

๐ Provide moisture

๐ Stimulate collagen and elastin production

๐ Offer antioxidant protection

๐ Promote skin cell renewal

Common ingredients include retinoids, vitamin C, AHA, niacinamide, coenzyme Q10, and hyaluronic acid.

2. Facial Treatments

Deep skin care treatments help delay and prevent skin problems. These may include facial massage, masks, cold vitamin infusion, and skincare application to promote new skin cell renewal, resulting in firmer and brighter skin.

3. Botox

Wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle movement that folds the skin. Botox works on the nervous system and muscles, helping them relax. As muscle movement decreases, wrinkles gradually fade.

4. Dermal Fillers

Fillers are used to treat deep wrinkles by injecting hyaluronic acid into areas where the skin has lost volume due to aging, such as under the eyes. They also help retain moisture and slow future wrinkle formation.

Medical Device Treatments

5.1 Exilis Ultra 360

Uses a combination of radiofrequency (RF) and ultrasound energy to safely deliver heat into the skin, stimulating collagen production and tightening the skin.

5.2 Ulthera

A non-invasive treatment that uses ultrasound energy to penetrate beneath the skin without needles, helping to lift, tighten, and reduce wrinkles.

5.3 New Doublo 2.0

Combines micro-focused ultrasound (MFU) and radiofrequency (RF) to stimulate collagen production and lift the skin.

It also includes Microneedle RF, which helps:

๐ Improve skin texture

๐ Reduce acne scars

๐ Tighten pores

๐ Smooth fine lines
