China and Thailand Partner to Advance Colorectal Cancer Screening and Genomics Research

Bangkok / Guangzhou, May 25 – China and Thailand are strengthening healthcare cooperation through a new partnership aimed at advancing early screening and research for colorectal cancer using genomic technologies.

 

BGI Genomics, a Chinese biotechnology company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Thailand’s Department of Medical Sciences under the Ministry of Public Health and Bangkok Genomics Innovation (BKGI), BGI Genomics’ joint venture in Thailand. The collaboration focuses on joint research into early colorectal cancer screening using DNA methylation technology and gut microbiome analysis.

 

The MoU was signed by Sarawut Boonsuk, Director-General of Thailand’s Department of Medical Sciences, Hou Yong, General Manager of BGI Genomics, and Korapot Asavavijit, Chairman of Bangkok Genomics Innovation.

 

The partnership aims to support the establishment of standardized research centers, strengthen Thailand’s colorectal cancer prevention and control system, and promote cooperation in areas such as technology transfer, practical implementation, and workforce training.

 

Sarawut said DNA methylation-based colorectal cancer screening is simple and highly accurate. He noted that cooperation with China could help reduce screening costs for patients and support earlier access to treatment. Colorectal cancer is currently among the most common cancers in Thailand, with early symptoms often difficult to detect and advanced-stage treatment placing a significant burden on patients and the healthcare system.

 

Under the collaboration, the three parties plan to establish a standardized gut microbiome research center in Thailand, build a national gut microbiome database, publish academic papers, share research findings, and promote patent applications and related industrial development.

 

BGI Genomics will also provide technical training for Thai research teams, while the three parties will exchange personnel for learning and training. The initiative is expected to help cultivate specialists in cancer screening and strengthen Thailand’s capabilities in genetic testing and public health research.
