Zhengzhou — a Chinese ophthalmology team successfully performed cataract surgery on a patient aboard the C909 aircraft, China’s first medical rescue aircraft of its kind, in Zhengzhou, central China’s Henan Province.
The aircraft has been converted into a specialized airborne eye hospital, featuring an operating room upgraded to meet aviation standards. It is capable of delivering routine medical services with technical support from the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University.
The C909 medical rescue aircraft was delivered in September 2025 in Zhengzhou and was further transformed into a “flying ophthalmic hospital” in November.
With a maximum payload capacity of 10 tonnes and a flight range of 3,700 kilometers, the mobile hospital is designed to extend high-quality eye care services along with ophthalmology training to regions with limited medical resources.
