On Tuesday (August 27), the Ministries of Science and Technology of the Philippines and China jointly funded the development of rapid and accurate diagnostic technology for early screening of autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and arthritis.

Renato Solidum, the Philippine Minister of Science and Technology, stated that this project reflects the ministry's commitment to finding partnerships that benefit communities. The project involves researchers from the University of San Agustin in the Philippines and Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

Solidum expressed hope that the research team would be able to deliver effective and reliable diagnostic tools through this initiative, benefiting citizens of both the Philippines and China.

The project, named SinoPhil CHARRME, aims to address bottlenecks in the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases using peptide technology. The research team will utilize peptide science and lipidomics to examine biomarkers of autoimmune diseases in patients' bodily fluids. If successful, the project's outcome could offer a less invasive alternative to traditional biopsy methods for diagnosing autoimmune diseases.

Solidum added that the project is currently in its third and final year. The research team has already designed, developed, and tested microfluidic chips intended for use as diagnostic tools for autoimmune diseases.
