Berlin  — On Tuesday, Oct. 22, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany’s leading public health agency, announced the country’s first reported case of mpox (monkeypox) Clade Ib infection. No related fatalities have been reported.

The RKI noted that the current assessment of mpox risk to Germany's general population remains low. However, the institute continues to monitor the situation closely and will update the assessment based on the latest information, if necessary.

This current risk assessment is due to the fact that "transmission of the mpox virus requires close physical contact." The RKI also highlighted that vaccines are available to protect against the Clade Ib strain of the virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox an international public health emergency in August 2024, signaling the second global mpox outbreak alert in two years.
