Tokyo — Several regions in Japan have experienced record-breaking temperatures for September, with dangerously high heat affecting areas from the east to the west of the country.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that 39 observation points, including Shizuoka in central Japan, recorded temperatures close to or exceeding previous September records.
Shizuoka saw temperatures soar to 39.2°C, the highest ever recorded for September since records began in 1940. Meanwhile, Obama in Fukui Prefecture and Toyooka in Hyogo Prefecture experienced dangerous temperatures of 38°C.
The agency stated that high pressure over eastern and western Japan, combined with a southern air mass, contributed to the intense heat. Daytime temperatures hit 35°C or higher in 143 locations, nearly one-sixth of Japan's observation points.
Weather officials predict that temperatures in western Japan and other areas may drop by Saturday (Sept. 21), but some areas, especially in the east, may experience another day of extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 35°C or more.
The JMA has issued heatstroke warnings for Chiba, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima prefectures (excluding the Amami region), advising residents to use air conditioning, stay hydrated, and consume appropriate amounts of salt.
