Phuket, Thailand – Prince of Songkla University (PSU) has officially announced the establishment of the Advanced Institute for Sustainable Health Systems of Prince of Songkla University, marking a significant milestone in strengthening healthcare, medical innovation, and the health economy in Southern Thailand.
Published in the Royal Gazette under the university's organizational restructuring announcement (No. 4, B.E. 2569), the new institute aims to serve as a central platform for integrating knowledge, research, technology, human resources, and healthcare partnerships to enhance medical services, disease prevention, and equitable access to healthcare.
At the heart of the initiative is the Andaman Health Center, Prince of Songkla University, located at the Phuket Campus, which has been designated as the institute's primary operational hub for the Andaman region.
The new institute brings together seven key organizations under one integrated ecosystem:
These units will work collaboratively to connect education, research, academic services, and healthcare delivery into a comprehensive and sustainable health system.
Associate Professor Dr. Phan Thongchumnum, Vice President of Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus, stated that the institute aims to become a regional center for innovation in sustainable healthcare systems by integrating research, education, and community engagement to improve people's quality of life and create a model for regional health system development.

The establishment of the institute represents an important step in positioning Phuket as an Andaman Health & Wellness Hub, aligning with Thailand's broader strategy to develop the country's health economy and strengthen its position in the global Medical & Wellness Tourism market.
By integrating a university hospital, digital dentistry center, medical technology services, and Thai traditional medicine within one ecosystem, the initiative is expected to significantly enhance the region's capacity to serve local communities, students, researchers, and international patients.
The new health ecosystem also creates opportunities for investment in healthcare technologies, biomedical industries, and medical workforce development throughout the Andaman region.
The establishment of the Advanced Institute for Sustainable Health Systems goes beyond an organizational restructuring initiative. It reflects a broader vision to transform Phuket from a globally recognized tourism destination into an international health and wellness city.
By bringing together education, research, hospitals, and innovation under one integrated framework, the institute is expected to strengthen Phuket's competitiveness in specialized healthcare services, health tourism, and life sciences investment sectors that continue to experience significant global growth.
The initiative also reinforces Prince of Songkla University's role as a key driver of sustainable development in Southern Thailand and the Andaman region while supporting Thailand's ambition to become one of Asia's leading destinations for healthcare, wellness, and medical innovation.
