The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is preparing to introduce a new tourism marketing strategy under the concept “Healing Is the New Luxury,” positioning Thailand as a destination for premium wellness experiences, health-focused travel and meaningful cultural journeys. The initiative will lead to the launch of the “Healing Journey Paradise in Thailand” campaign in early 2027, with TAT's 29 overseas offices tasked with developing innovative travel routes to attract high-value international visitors and distribute tourism revenue to secondary destinations and local communities.
Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, outlined the agency's plans to introduce the new strategy following the conclusion of its regional tourism promotion campaign, “Feel All the Feeling,” around September - October 2026.
The upcoming initiative represents a shift toward tourism experiences that combine wellness, relaxation, cultural discovery, local lifestyles and premium hospitality.
TAT also plans to restructure aspects of its international marketing approach, encouraging overseas offices to develop travel products tailored to the interests and expectations of specific visitor segments.
The broader objective is to strengthen Thailand's competitiveness in the international tourism market while creating sustainable economic opportunities beyond the country's established tourism destinations.
At the center of the new strategy is a five part experience framework known as the 5Rs: Healing, Recharge, Relish, Revive and Rediscover.
The framework is intended to guide the development of travel experiences that connect personal well-being with tourism.
Under this approach, luxury tourism is no longer defined solely by premium accommodation or exclusive services. It also encompasses experiences that allow travelers to relax, restore their energy, explore local culture and reconnect with themselves.
TAT plans to translate this concept into the “Healing Journey Paradise in Thailand” campaign, scheduled for an official launch in early 2027.
The campaign will promote Thailand's potential as a destination for wellness tourism, premium travel experiences and health-oriented journeys.
Rather than relying exclusively on established tourism products, TAT aims to encourage the development of distinctive itineraries that respond to changing traveler preferences.
A key component of the strategy involves TAT's network of 29 overseas offices, which will be challenged to create new tourism routes designed for their respective international markets.
Each office will be required to propose three itineraries across different product categories: Gold, Silver and Bronze.
The proposals will be evaluated based on their market potential, originality, operational readiness and ability to attract international travelers.
From the 29 participating offices, TAT plans to select 10 offices with the strongest proposals.
The selected offices will receive additional marketing and promotional budgets to support the implementation of their proposed tourism products.
Successful concepts may also be adapted and promoted across other international markets, allowing innovative itineraries to reach a wider audience.
The initiative is designed to encourage overseas offices to move beyond conventional destination promotion and take a more active role in developing market-driven tourism experiences.
TAT's proposed Healing Journey itineraries will be organized into three tiers to support more targeted tourism marketing.
Gold Tier: Premium and Market-Ready Experiences
The Gold category will focus on major tourism destinations and high-end travel products that are already equipped to serve international visitors.
These experiences are expected to offer a high level of service readiness and can be introduced to overseas markets without extensive additional development.
Silver and Bronze Tiers: Secondary Destinations and Community Tourism
The Silver and Bronze categories will emphasize connections to Thailand's 55 secondary tourism provinces and 18 selected tourism communities under the Link Plus initiative.
These routes may include destinations and experiences that require additional product development, market stimulation or promotional support.
By integrating secondary destinations and local communities into premium travel itineraries, TAT aims to expand tourism opportunities beyond established hotspots.
The approach also seeks to create more diverse visitor experiences while supporting local businesses and regional economic development.
Another important element of TAT's strategy is a stronger emphasis on storytelling and the creation of distinctive tourism experiences.
Instead of repeatedly promoting existing attractions in familiar formats, the agency wants tourism operators to introduce new narratives, destinations and cultural connections.
In Bangkok, for example, TAT highlighted opportunities to expand tourism experiences beyond popular neighborhoods such as Song Wat and Talat Noi into nearby areas including Chakkrawat.
These neighborhoods offer opportunities to develop itineraries based on local history, architecture, cultural heritage, cuisine and community lifestyles.
The Healing Journey concept is also intended to extend beyond conventional wellness retreats.
Potential themes include Culture & History, Mindfulness & Spirituality, Festivals and Gastronomy, allowing operators to create travel experiences based on different visitor interests.
The approach also supports group-led tourism, in which itineraries are designed around the needs of specific traveler segments rather than fixed destinations.
One example is a proposed educational travel experience from TAT's Tokyo office targeting students and young travelers.
This flexibility could allow Thailand to develop a broader portfolio of tourism experiences for different international markets.
TAT plans to involve senior agency executives and tourism operators in evaluating the proposed itineraries.
The selection process will assess three main areas: marketing effectiveness, destination readiness and service quality.
First, each overseas office must submit a comprehensive marketing plan outlining its target audience, visitor acquisition strategy, promotional activities and sales approach.
Second, the proposed destinations must demonstrate sufficient supply-side readiness.
This includes coordination with provincial governors, Provincial Administrative Organizations and local administrative authorities to ensure that transportation, accessibility and tourism services can support the proposed visitor experiences.
Third, TAT will emphasize workforce development through its Strive for Excellence approach.
Local tourism personnel and service providers, including long-tail boat operators and community-based tourism businesses, will be encouraged to strengthen their service capabilities to meet the expectations of higher-value travelers.
The development and selection process is scheduled for completion by December 2026, ahead of the planned campaign launch in early 2027.
Alongside the development of new travel routes, TAT plans to expand collaboration with business partners through its Partner 360 approach.
The initiative aims to connect tourism businesses with a wider network of partners while introducing more targeted marketing strategies.
TAT intends to make greater use of artificial intelligence, consumer insights and social media platforms to identify and engage specific international visitor segments.
Under the broader Visitor Economy concept, priority markets include medical and wellness travelers, beauty tourism visitors, students and educational travelers, and tourists from super long-haul markets.
The focus on Medical & Wellness Tourism and Beauty Tourism reflects opportunities to connect Thailand's healthcare and wellness services with its established tourism infrastructure.
Potential collaborations may involve hotels, resorts, healthcare providers, wellness operators, travel agencies and other service businesses.
By developing more integrated tourism experiences, TAT aims to strengthen Thailand's appeal among travelers seeking specialized, premium and personalized journeys.
TAT is also advancing its Link Plus initiative to connect high-end tourism experiences with community-based destinations.
The program has identified 18 tourism communities with the potential to participate in premium tourism itineraries.
One example involves proposed collaboration with superyacht brokers to introduce luxury travelers to Ban Bang Rong, a recognized community tourism destination in Phuket.
The concept seeks to connect visitors arriving through premium travel channels with authentic local experiences, including community culture, food, natural environments and traditional ways of life.
By linking luxury tourism with community-based activities, TAT aims to create opportunities for local businesses to participate in higher-value tourism markets.
The initiative also supports efforts to distribute tourism income more widely while preserving the distinctive identities of participating communities.
Beyond wellness-focused itineraries, TAT plans to strengthen Thailand's tourism appeal through major festivals and nighttime experiences.
Internationally recognized events, including Loy Krathong, New Year countdown celebrations and major music and arts festivals such as Wonderfruit, are among the activities highlighted in the strategy.
A key upcoming initiative is VIJIT CHAO PHRAYA 2026, scheduled to take place from November 13 to December 13, 2026.
The event is planned to feature creative lighting installations and visual experiences along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok.
By transforming riverside landmarks and landscapes into nighttime attractions, TAT aims to encourage visitors to explore Bangkok after sunset.
The initiative is also designed to connect nighttime tourism with restaurants, hotels, river cruises, attractions and hospitality businesses along the river.
This integrated approach is intended to encourage visitor spending, support local businesses and create additional reasons for travelers to extend their stays.
TAT also plans to continue developing VIJIT events across Thailand's five regions to promote travel beyond Bangkok and established tourism centers.
These activities form part of the agency's broader efforts to diversify tourism products, increase overnight stays and distribute economic benefits across the country.
The planned launch of “Healing Journey Paradise in Thailand” reflects TAT's ambition to redefine Thailand's tourism offerings around meaningful experiences, personal well-being and sustainable value creation.
By integrating health, wellness, luxury travel, cultural heritage, gastronomy and community tourism, the strategy seeks to develop products that appeal to high-value international visitors.
The involvement of TAT's overseas offices in designing market-specific itineraries also represents a more collaborative approach to tourism product development.
Rather than focusing solely on promoting existing destinations, the agency aims to connect international market demand with new experiences developed across Thailand.
The strategy could create opportunities for healthcare providers, wellness businesses, hospitality operators and local communities to participate in the country's evolving tourism economy.
“Healing Is the New Luxury” therefore represents more than a tourism marketing message. It is a framework for developing premium, wellness-oriented travel experiences that connect international tourism demand with local economic opportunities, cultural identity and long-term sustainability.
With the official campaign launch planned for early 2027, Thailand is preparing to introduce a new generation of travel experiences designed to attract high-value visitors while supporting more inclusive tourism growth.
