Bangkok, Thailand – Thailand’s iconic Songkran Festival 2026 has exceeded expectations, drawing massive participation from both domestic and international travelers and reinforcing the country’s position as a global festival destination.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the nationwide celebrations created vibrant tourism activity across all regions, reflecting strong traveler confidence during the long holiday period. The festival is projected to generate more than 30.35 billion baht in tourism revenue between April 11 - 15, 2026, marking a 6% increase year-on-year.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT, stated that the overwhelming success of Songkran this year highlights the global appeal of Thai culture and the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between public and private sectors, as well as local communities. The festival was elevated under a value-based tourism strategy, emphasizing meaningful experiences through Thailand’s rich cultural heritage, traditions, cuisine, and creative expressions.

In Bangkok, major celebration zones such as Silom Road, Siam Square, and Khao San Road attracted large crowds of revelers. The flagship event, Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2026 at Benjakitti Park, welcomed over 108,000 visitors between April 11 - 13, including more than 52,000 international tourists, generating an estimated economic impact of over 283 million baht. Meanwhile, the “Saneh Art by Songkran Festival 2026” at Lumphini Park attracted nearly 95,000 attendees, particularly among younger generations engaging in creative cultural experiences.

Across the country, key destinations reported strong tourism momentum. In Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, the unique “Songkran with Elephants” celebration remained a major attraction, blending cultural identity with festive entertainment. Northern and northeastern regions showcased traditional ceremonies such as water blessings, cultural parades, and community rituals, offering visitors meaningful cultural immersion.

Southern Thailand also experienced significant growth, particularly in Songkhla, where cross-border tourism from Malaysia surged. Border checkpoints recorded over 36,000 arrivals between April 10 - 12, with hotel occupancy rates averaging 80% and generating more than 700 million baht in local revenue. Events such as “Southern Border Songkran Festival” and “SUNGAIKOLOK Midnight Songkran 2026” further boosted regional tourism, highlighting the potential of border cities as emerging cultural and nightlife destinations.

Overall, TAT estimates that international arrivals during the festival period will reach approximately 500,000 visitors, generating around 8.1 billion baht in revenue, while domestic travel is expected to account for nearly 6 million trips, contributing approximately 22.25 billion baht.

TAT emphasized that Songkran continues to serve as a key driver of Thailand’s tourism industry, supporting economic growth, income distribution, and the country’s global image as a world class festival destination. Moving forward, Thailand aims to further elevate its festivals on the international stage while promoting sustainable, high-value tourism experiences.
