Thailand Issues Summer Health Alert: 3 Diseases and 2 Key Risks to Watch

Bangkok, Thailand — The Department of Disease Control (DDC), under the Ministry of Public Health, has issued a public advisory urging citizens to remain vigilant against three common diseases and two major health risks that are expected to rise during the summer season. The agency also provided preventive guidelines to help reduce the risk of illness and fatalities. Dr. Montien Kanasawat, Director-General of the DDC, stated that Thailand has officially entered the summer season, bringing hot and humid weather across many regions, which may negatively impact public health, particularly in relation to heat and hygiene-related conditions. In response, the Department has released the 2026 Summer Health Advisory to guide the public on proper self-care during this period.

Health risks during the summer can be broadly categorized into two main groups: food- and waterborne diseases, and heat-related health hazards. Among food- and waterborne diseases, the most concerning include diarrheal diseases, food poisoning, and cholera, all of which are commonly caused by consuming contaminated food or water. These illnesses may result in symptoms such as watery diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. The Department advises the public to follow the principle of “eat cooked, hot, and clean food,” emphasizing the importance of consuming freshly prepared meals, using serving spoons when sharing dishes, maintaining proper hand hygiene, and drinking clean or boiled water, as well as using ice from certified sources.

At the same time, heat-related illnesses pose another significant risk, particularly among the elderly, individuals with underlying health conditions, and those working outdoors. Exposure to extreme heat can lead to conditions such as heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, which can be life-threatening. The public is advised to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, drink sufficient water at least eight to ten glasses per day wear breathable clothing, and refrain from consuming alcohol.

In addition, drowning incidents tend to increase between March and May, especially among children under the age of 15 and adults. The Department urges the public to be aware of high-risk water areas, use flotation devices, and follow proper water rescue principles, including the “Shout, Throw, Reach” method, rather than attempting to rescue victims by jumping into the water. It also emphasizes the “Life Jacket – Rules – No Alcohol” approach, which includes wearing life jackets, following safety regulations, and avoiding alcohol consumption during water activities, as well as closely supervising children and the elderly.

The Department of Disease Control encourages the public to strictly follow these recommendations to ensure a safe and healthy summer season while minimizing the risk of illness and loss of life.
