BANGKOK — Thailand’s Neurological Institute, under the Department of Medical Services, has opened an Advanced Neurological Rehabilitation Center to provide comprehensive rehabilitation services for patients with neurological conditions, combining specialized multidisciplinary care with advanced rehabilitation technologies.

Dr. Nattapong Wongwiwat, Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, said the Ministry of Public Health has a policy to strengthen agencies under the department and advance Thailand’s neurological rehabilitation services toward a modern, comprehensive and systematic model aligned with international standards.

The establishment of the Advanced Neurological Rehabilitation Center is expected to play an important role in expanding access to specialized rehabilitation services, reducing long-term disability and dependency, and helping patients regain the ability to perform daily activities and return to society with a better quality of life.

Multidisciplinary Team Provides Specialized Neurological Rehabilitation

Dr. Anek Kanoksilp, Director of the Neurological Institute, said the center brings together a multidisciplinary team with expertise in neurological rehabilitation.

The team includes rehabilitation physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, rehabilitation nurses, prosthetists and orthotists, and other healthcare professionals working collaboratively to provide individualized rehabilitation care.

The center’s approach is designed to address multiple dimensions of recovery, including patients’ physical, psychological and social needs, from the early stages of rehabilitation through their return to everyday life in the community.

Advanced Technology Supports Neurological Recovery

The center integrates modern medical equipment and rehabilitation innovations with rehabilitation practices based on international standards.

Technologies available at the center include robotic rehabilitation systems for lower-limb movement, adjustable rehabilitation beds, balance training systems, robotic devices for arm and hand movement, robotic rehabilitation gloves, electrical stimulation devices for swallowing rehabilitation, and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).

These technologies are used alongside conventional rehabilitation approaches to support neurological recovery and help patients improve their ability to perform everyday activities to the greatest extent possible.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation From Early Recovery to Daily Life

Neurological conditions can affect movement, communication, swallowing and the ability to carry out daily activities, making rehabilitation an important part of ongoing patient care.

The Advanced Neurological Rehabilitation Center is designed to provide rehabilitation across the continuum of care, beginning in the early stages of recovery and continuing through the patient’s transition back to everyday life.

By combining specialized healthcare professionals with rehabilitation technology, the Neurological Institute aims to strengthen access to comprehensive neurological rehabilitation and support patients in achieving the highest possible level of functional independence and quality of life.

The center also represents part of the Department of Medical Services’ broader effort to modernize Thailand’s neurological rehabilitation system and develop specialized services in line with international standards.
