Songkran is a festival that many eagerly await to return home, reconnect with family, and spend quality time together. However, aside from the fun, there are also several risks we need to be aware of, ranging from travel accidents to health issues caused by unsafe food and water, as well as the dangers hidden in the water itself.
To ensure a safe journey during Songkran, preparation is key:
๐ If traveling by private car: Check your car’s condition before you leave, especially brakes, tires, and fuel. Have it inspected by a professional or a trusted service center.
๐ If traveling by public transport: Check timetables and the safety of your transport, including the condition of the vehicle, cleanliness, and seatbelt use. Avoid traveling in unregistered buses or overcrowded vans.
๐ Choose safe and less crowded routes
๐ Stay alert and cautious, keeping an appropriate speed limit
๐ If riding a motorcycle, always wear a helmet
๐ Rest and switch drivers when necessary during long trips
๐ If driving: Avoid driving behind trucks, and maintain at least a 30-meter distance. Never drive if you’re feeling drowsy or have consumed alcohol.
๐ Food and Water Safety: Only eat clean, freshly prepared food, and drink plenty of water during your journey.
If an accident occurs, stay calm, stop the car, and check for injuries. Call emergency services or an ambulance, and if possible, take pictures for evidence. Contact insurance and file a police report if necessary.
Playing water during Songkran is fun, but safety is crucial. Here are safety tips divided into three stages:
1. Wear light-colored, breathable clothing.
2. Carry clean drinking water to stay hydrated.
3. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
4. Wear sandals to protect your feet from moisture and fungal infections.
1. Drink water regularly and avoid sugary drinks and alcohol.
2. Avoid prolonged exposure to outdoor water play, especially between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
3. If you feel overheated, sweaty, confused, or dizzy, seek medical attention immediately.
4. Do not play with ice-cold water or dirty water.
1. Take a shower and change into breathable clothes immediately.
2. Drink plenty of water and stay in a well-ventilated area.
3. Avoid direct exposure to fans that could cause chills.
1. Skin Infections: Prolonged exposure to water can soften the skin and make it more vulnerable to bacterial infections.
2. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Caused by bacteria or viruses from contact with someone’s eye discharge or shared items.
3. Common Cold: Prolonged exposure to hot and cold water can weaken your body’s immune system.
4. Leptospirosis: Caused by bacteria found in animal urine, often found in water on the streets or used in water play.
5. Cholera: Caused by ingesting water or food contaminated with cholera bacteria.
Proper preparation and staying cautious can ensure that you enjoy a safe and fun Songkran festival, both during your travel and while playing water. Don’t forget to take care of yourself and share these tips with others in your community to raise awareness and ensure a healthy, enjoyable time for everyone during this Songkran
