WHO and Japan Provide 453 Million Yen to Strengthen Health Services Along the Thailand–Myanmar Border
World Health Organization (WHO) and the Government of Japan have signed a grant agreement worth 453 million Japanese Yen (approximately US$2.95 million) to enhance health services in Tak Province along the Thailand–Myanmar border. The initiative aims to strengthen healthcare capacity in border areas and improve access to essential services for local communities, including migrants and displaced populations.

The initiative aims to strengthen healthcare capacity in border areas and improve access to essential services for local communities, including migrants and displaced populations.
The project is being implemented in collaboration with Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) through support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It seeks to further reinforce Thailand’s strong commitment to health service delivery and health security, particularly in strategically important border regions. Key objectives include enhancing local health system capacity, expanding access to critical healthcare services, and strengthening public health preparedness.
Tak Province has faced increasing demand on healthcare facilities due to cross-border population movements, placing sustained pressure on frontline services. The project will support the upgrading of health facilities and training centres, provision of medical equipment, capacity building for health personnel, and improved readiness to respond to public health risks.
Dr Ailan Li, WHO Representative to Thailand, stated that Thailand continues to demonstrate strong commitment and leadership in ensuring equitable health services for migrants and displaced populations.
The initiative is expected to benefit more than 200,000 Thai citizens, approximately 60,000 displaced persons from Myanmar, and other cross-border migrant communities. WHO will continue working closely with the Ministry of Public Health and partners to sustain essential health services and further strengthen health security along the Thailand–Myanmar border.
