KINSHASA — The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the latest Ebola outbreak in Uganda over after the country recorded no new confirmed cases for 42 consecutive days, marking an important public health milestone in efforts to contain the deadly virus.
According to WHO, Uganda’s health authorities concluded that the 2026 Ebola outbreak had ended after completing the required period without detecting a new confirmed infection.
The declaration followed epidemiological investigations and scientific assessments of the outbreak, providing evidence that chains of transmission had been interrupted.
The 42-day period is an important benchmark in Ebola outbreak response and is commonly used before an outbreak can be declared over.
During this period, health authorities maintain heightened surveillance to identify possible infections, trace contacts and investigate suspected cases to ensure that transmission has stopped.
Uganda’s Ministry of Health had announced the end of the country’s 2026 Ebola outbreak on July 28, based on scientific evidence from epidemiological investigations and the characteristics of the outbreak.
WHO subsequently confirmed that no new confirmed cases had been reported for 42 consecutive days.
The milestone underscores the importance of surveillance, rapid case detection, contact tracing and coordinated public health measures in preventing further transmission.
Uganda initially declared the Ebola outbreak on May 15, 2026, after confirming an infection involving a person who had arrived from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The imported case prompted health authorities to activate outbreak response measures aimed at identifying additional infections and preventing further spread.
During the outbreak, Uganda recorded a total of 20 laboratory-confirmed Ebola cases.
Of those patients, 18 recovered and two died, according to official figures.
The relatively contained number of cases highlights the role of early detection and rapid public health intervention in limiting the spread of Ebola, particularly when infections cross international borders.
Uganda shares a border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Ebola outbreaks have occurred repeatedly over the years.
