November 14 – In recognition of World Diabetes Day, the ArokaGo platform has featured information on diabetes provided by MedPark Hospital. This comprehensive resource offers insight into diabetes, covering its definition, causes, types, symptoms, as well as methods for diagnosis and treatment.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition caused by abnormalities in insulin function, leading the body to struggle in utilizing blood glucose for energy, which raises blood sugar levels. Without treatment, diabetes can lead to serious complications.

Types of Diabetes

Diabetes is classified into four main types:

  • Type 1 Diabetes – Caused by an immune response that damages insulin-producing cells.
  • Type 2 Diabetes – Often associated with genetics and lifestyle factors.
  • Specific Type Diabetes – Related to specific insulin function abnormalities.
  • Gestational Diabetes – Occurs during pregnancy and may resolve post-birth but can increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes later.

Major Complications

Untreated diabetes can lead to complications affecting various organs:

  • Eyes – Diabetic retinopathy and potential vision loss.
  • Kidneys – Diabetic nephropathy, which can lead to kidney failure.
  • Nervous System – Numbness in extremities.
  • Heart and Brain – Increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diabetes can be diagnosed through methods like fasting blood glucose tests (8-12 hours of fasting). Treatment focuses on dietary management, exercise, medication to lower blood sugar, and regular health screenings to minimize long-term complications.

For those at risk of diabetes, early screening and management can help prevent complications and support a normal daily life.
