At the Fresh Breath Clinic, we understand the concerns and discomfort that bad breath, or halitosis, can cause. Our clinic specializes in diagnosing and treating both physiologic and pathologic halitosis to help individuals regain their confidence and oral freshness.
Physiologic Halitosis is typically related to normal biological processes occurring in the oral cavity. It can result from the accumulation of bacteria on the tongue, particularly on the posterior region, which leads to putrefaction and the release of malodorous compounds. Certain foods, such as onions, garlic, and coffee, can also contribute to temporary bad breath.
Pathologic Halitosis, on the other hand, is associated with underlying diseases or conditions that contribute to persistent or aggravated bad breath. This can include respiratory or digestive system abnormalities like sinusitis, tonsillitis, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
To diagnose halitosis, we offer two methods:
Self-Test: You can conduct a self-test by using a plastic spoon to scrape the top of your tongue and smelling the residue. If you suspect that the odor could be indicative of pathologic halitosis, it is recommended to seek prompt treatment.
Oral Hygiene Test: Our clinic utilizes advanced diagnostic equipment, such as Gas Chromatography, to digitally measure the levels of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in your mouth air. This technology provides accurate readings of sulfur components, including hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide. The results are displayed in graph form via a computer interface, allowing for precise assessment and treatment planning.
Treatment for halitosis focuses on addressing the factors contributing to bad breath through proper oral hygiene practices. Our guidelines include thorough teeth and tongue cleaning, using dental floss to reach difficult areas, and preventing the buildup of bacteria from dental issues like cavities, deteriorated fillings, or gingivitis. A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, adequate hydration, stress management, sufficient rest, and regular exercise are also essential to support a strong immune system and overall oral health.
Our Fresh Breath Clinic is dedicated to helping individuals overcome the challenges of halitosis, providing personalized treatment plans and guidance to achieve long-lasting oral freshness and renewed confidence.
