Stroke, or paralysis caused by cerebrovascular disease, is the third most common serious condition after heart disease and cancer. In Thailand, the number of stroke patients continues to increase. Symptoms often develop rapidly or suddenly due to insufficient blood supply to the brain caused by narrowed or blocked blood vessels. In some cases, symptoms may come and go or gradually develop over a short period of time. Recovery, however, can take a long time.
If patients receive appropriate and timely treatment from the beginning, the risk of death and disability can be significantly reduced, allowing many patients to recover and return to their normal daily lives.
Stroke in women is more commonly associated with several risk factors, including a family history of stroke, high blood cholesterol, and heart disease such as cardiac arrhythmia and coronary artery disease. Patients who have previously experienced an ischemic stroke have a 10% risk of recurrence within the first year. Other risk factors include smoking and being overweight. In addition, women who experience migraine headaches or have previously used oral contraceptive pills may also have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

An important aspect of stroke treatment is providing appropriate patient care to prevent the condition from worsening and to reduce the risk of recurrence. Patients require holistic care that focuses on preventing recurrent stroke and supporting rehabilitation. Family members are also encouraged to participate in providing care and support throughout the recovery process. However, for the general population, the best approach is to prevent stroke from occurring in the first place.
“Prevention requires a health-conscious lifestyle, including controlling blood pressure, maintaining a healthy body weight, eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, avoiding smoking and alcohol consumption, and undergoing regular health check-ups. These measures can help reduce the risk factors associated with stroke.”
