Hemodialysis Unit

The Hemodialysis Unit at Rajavej Hospital Chiang Mai is dedicated to providing kidney replacement therapy for patients whose kidneys are not functioning adequately. The treatment processes help eliminate waste and excess water from the body, maintain water and salt balance, and treat complications to reduce side effects caused by chronic renal failure. This approach helps patients survive and maintain a good quality of life. 

The Hemodialysis Unit caters to patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease who require renal replacement therapy.  

We offer three methods: 

• Hemodialysis by Artificial Hemodialysis: This method involves drawing blood from the body to pass through a blood filter to remove waste and adjust the balance of mineral salts and acid-base. The cleansed blood is then returned to the body. Each session takes about 4-5 hours and is typically needed 2-3 times a week for life or until a kidney transplant can be performed. 

• Peritoneal Dialysis: This involves inserting dialysis fluid into the abdominal cavity. The solution stays there for about 4-6 hours to allow the exchange of waste and water by permeating the peritoneum. The solution is replaced 4-5 times a day. Modern equipment is used to make this process more convenient. 

• Kidney Transplant Surgery: This is a surgical procedure to replace the failed kidney with a healthy one from a donor. The donor can be a deceased person or a living person such as a relative or spouse with a matching blood type. Thorough tissue examination is carried out, and the donor's kidney health is rigorously checked. 

The Hemodialysis Unit provides the following services: 

• Treatment of acute kidney failure 

• Treatment of chronic kidney failure 

• It is equipped with 40 dialysis machines 

The Unit operates on a three-round system: 

• Round 1: 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. 

• Round 2: 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. 

• Round 3: 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. 

Business hours are Monday to Saturday, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. 

The Hemodialysis Unit at Rajavej Hospital Chiang Mai offers kidney replacement therapies including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplant for end-stage chronic kidney disease. With 40 dialysis machines, the unit operates from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday to Saturday, in three shifts.
