Pre-Marital and Pre-Pregnancy Health Screening

For many, the image of a complete family includes not only a loving couple but also a child often seen as the cherished bond that brings everything together. This is why many couples wish to start a family soon after marriage. Naturally, when it comes to having a child, every parent wants to ensure their baby is born healthy. Marriage therefore becomes more than just a commitment it marks the first step toward careful planning and preparation for parenthood.

Pre-marital and pre-pregnancy health screening goes beyond a routine physical checkup. In addition to a basic physical exam and detailed medical history, these screenings typically include blood tests to assess overall health and identify any potential risks. This process helps determine how well-prepared both partners are, physically and genetically, to have a child. If any abnormalities are detected, early intervention allows for proper treatment and preventive planning. This can significantly reduce the risk of passing on health concerns to your partner or future children. In this light, pre-marital health screening is a crucial step that should not be overlooked.

Blood tests in pre-marital and pre-pregnancy screening include:

1. Complete Blood Count (CBC): This test evaluates the characteristics and quantity of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Abnormal results may indicate conditions such as anemia, thalassemia, leukemia, or other infections.
2.ABO Blood Group and Rh Factor: This test determines the ABO blood group and Rh factor. While most individuals in Thailand are Rh-positive, some may have the rarer Rh-negative type, which requires special precautions. Women with Rh-negative blood may have an increased risk of miscarriage or fetal growth issues in a second pregnancy if not properly managed.
3.Hepatitis B Screening (HBsAg and Anti-HBs): This test checks for both the presence of hepatitis B infection and immunity. If a carrier is detected, the virus may be transmitted through blood or sexual contact and poses a risk to the unborn child. In such cases, partners may receive preventive vaccinations and plan the pregnancy with appropriate medical guidance.
4.Haemoglobin Typing (Hb Typing): This test screens for abnormal haemoglobin patterns that may indicate thalassemia or related inherited blood disorders. These conditions can be passed on to the child and, in severe cases, may result in fetal death or serious complications for the mother if left undiagnosed.
5.Rubella Immunity (Rubella IgG): This test is performed specifically for women to determine immunity against rubella. Infection during pregnancy can lead to severe birth defects, including hearing loss, vision abnormalities, developmental delays, or even miscarriage. If no immunity is found, the woman should receive the rubella vaccine, followed by at least three months of contraception before attempting pregnancy.
6.Syphilis Screening (RPR): This test detects syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection that can cause pregnancy complications if left untreated.
7.HIV Antibody Test (Anti-HIV): This test identifies antibodies produced in response to HIV infection. If HIV is detected, early treatment can help manage the condition and significantly reduce the risk of transmission to a partner or unborn child.
The dream of having a complete and loving family is one shared by every couple. And that dream often begins with good planning. A strong foundation for family life starts with proactive health screening to prevent and manage common illnesses, sexually transmitted infections, and genetic conditions that could affect your partner or be passed on to future children. It’s also essential to consult with a medical professional, who can provide guidance and help develop a safe, personalized plan for having a child. When both parents are healthy and well-prepared, it significantly contributes to the overall health and well-being of the baby during pregnancy and beyond.

A list of 7 foods to nourish the uterine lining and prepare for pregnancy

Effective pre-pregnancy preparation should focus on consuming nutritious foods such as leafy green vegetables, eggs, seafood, whole grains, nuts, berries, and avocados to nourish egg cells and prepare the uterine lining for implantation. This should be combined with lifestyle changes such as drinking enough water, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting caffeine and alcohol intake, and consulting a doctor for systematic planning. All of these will help prepare your body for becoming a healthy parent.
