The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Shanghai Office, has partnered with Lann Space, a health and wellness service provider in China, to launch the third journey in the Thailand Wellness Retreat Series. Under the concept “Healing is the New Luxury,” the program highlights Saraburi and Khao Yai as emerging destinations for holistic restoration, mindfulness and nature-based wellness, targeting high-spending Chinese travelers seeking meaningful premium travel experiences.

Thailand is expanding its wellness tourism proposition beyond traditional medical services and spa experiences, as a new generation of travelers increasingly seeks journeys that support physical, mental and emotional well-being.

The latest initiative by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Shanghai Office, in collaboration with Lann Space, reflects this shift through the third edition of the Thailand Wellness Retreat Series, featuring Saraburi and Khao Yai in Nakhon Ratchasima as destinations for holistic wellness experiences.

The retreat is offered at RMB 17,800, excluding airfare, positioning the program within the premium wellness travel segment and targeting Chinese travelers who prioritize the quality and value of an experience rather than price alone.

“Healing is the New Luxury”: A New Definition of Premium Travel

The concept “Healing is the New Luxury” reflects a broader transformation in how modern travelers define luxury.

Luxury travel has traditionally been associated with five-star accommodation, fine dining, exclusive services and material comfort. Today, however, time, tranquility, quality sleep, emotional balance, access to nature and the opportunity to disconnect from demanding urban lifestyles are increasingly becoming valuable forms of luxury in their own right.

The Thailand Wellness Retreat has therefore been designed around a holistic approach to well-being.

Activities include mindfulness and meditation, forest bathing, breathwork, and Thai-inspired activities and rituals aimed at creating opportunities for relaxation and personal restoration.

Participants will also stay in nature-oriented accommodation in Saraburi and Khao Yai, complemented by healthy meals prepared with carefully selected local ingredients.

Together, these elements are designed to connect wellness with nature, food, local culture and the distinctive character of the destination.

Why Saraburi and Khao Yai?

The selection of Saraburi and Khao Yai for the third Thailand Wellness Retreat also highlights the potential to develop new wellness tourism routes beyond Thailand's established tourism hubs.

Both destinations are relatively accessible from Bangkok while offering a distinctly different environment characterized by greenery, mountains and nature-based experiences.

Khao Yai, in particular, already has a strong reputation as a leisure and nature destination. Integrating mindfulness, nutrition, nature-based activities and holistic wellness experiences could further strengthen its position as a wellness destination for both domestic and international travelers.

The approach also demonstrates how existing local assets  from natural landscapes and local ingredients to hospitality and cultural practices — can be transformed into higher-value wellness tourism experiences without relying solely on large-scale medical infrastructure.

Chinese Urban Travelers Seek Emotional Restoration

China remains an important market for Thailand's tourism industry, while wellness is emerging as an increasingly relevant factor in the travel decisions of urban consumers.

According to TAT's Shanghai Office, China's wellness tourism market continues to show growth potential, particularly among urban professionals who are increasingly interested in holistic health, stress management and emotional well-being.

The demand for “emotional healing” is therefore becoming increasingly relevant to the design of travel experiences.

For these travelers, a holiday is no longer simply about visiting another destination. The journey itself is expected to provide opportunities to slow down, recover from daily pressures and return home feeling physically and emotionally restored.

This shift could position wellness travel as more than a niche tourism product, expanding it into a lifestyle category for upper-middle-income and high-spending consumers.

Xiaohongshu and Douyin Drive the Rise of “Meaningful Travel”

Digital platforms are also playing an important role in shaping the travel preferences of younger Chinese consumers.

Platforms such as Xiaohongshu and Douyin have become influential channels for destination discovery, travel inspiration and purchasing decisions, particularly for lifestyle-oriented experiences.

Content around self-care, nature retreats, healthy food, meditation, slow living and escaping the pressures of urban life has helped increase the visibility of wellness-focused travel.

This is closely connected with the growing concept of “Meaningful Travel” — journeys that offer travelers a sense of personal value and emotional significance beyond sightseeing.

For Thailand, the trend presents an opportunity to combine several existing strengths, including natural resources, Thai hospitality, local cuisine, traditional wellness practices and cultural experiences, into distinctive travel products that can resonate with international wellness travelers.

Strategic Partnership to Reach High-Potential Chinese Travelers

The partnership between TAT's Shanghai Office and Lann Space also demonstrates a more targeted approach to wellness tourism marketing.

By collaborating with a health and wellness partner that already has access to health-conscious consumers in China, the initiative can potentially reach audiences with a demonstrated interest in well-being rather than relying exclusively on broad destination marketing.

Developing the Thailand Wellness Retreat as a series also provides continuity and creates opportunities to introduce different Thai wellness destinations and experiences to returning travelers.

The initiative additionally plans to leverage key opinion leaders (KOLs) and credible health and wellness content across Chinese digital platforms to build awareness and inspire travel among target consumers.

Data and traveler insights are also expected to play an important role in refining products and services to better match the changing expectations of China's wellness-oriented travelers.

From Medical Tourism to the Wider Wellness Economy

The initiative also reflects a broader opportunity for Thailand to expand its international health tourism proposition from medical tourism toward the wider wellness economy.

Thailand has long been recognized internationally for medical services ranging from health check-ups and dentistry to specialized treatments and cosmetic procedures, alongside its globally recognized spa and traditional Thai massage sectors.

However, the future health travel market does not begin only when a traveler becomes ill.

New opportunities are emerging among consumers who want to actively maintain and improve their health through preventive wellness, healthy aging, nutrition, mental wellness, mindfulness and nature-based wellness.

This means the potential international health traveler of the future may not necessarily be a patient.

They may simply be healthy individuals who want to become healthier, feel better and improve their quality of life.

This significantly broadens the potential market beyond conventional medical tourism.

Thailand's Opportunity as a Premium Wellness Destination

For Thailand, the next challenge is therefore not simply to communicate that the country “has wellness.”

The greater opportunity is to transform its existing assets into integrated wellness experiences that international travelers can discover, purchase and experience as a complete journey.

Accommodation, healthy cuisine, nature, wellness activities, health professionals, Thai wisdom, transportation and hospitality can all become interconnected elements of a destination experience.

The Thailand Wellness Retreat Series provides an example of how destination promotion can evolve into the development of clearly defined wellness tourism products for specific international markets.

The premium Chinese market is particularly significant due to its purchasing power, growing interest in health and well-being, and strong reliance on digital platforms for discovering and evaluating travel experiences.

If Thailand can continue developing market-specific wellness products while using traveler insights to refine the experience, the country has an opportunity to strengthen its position beyond a leisure and medical tourism destination and move further toward becoming a leading Premium Wellness Destination on the international stage.

For a new generation of premium travelers, luxury may no longer be measured solely by the number of stars attached to a hotel.

It may increasingly be measured in something more personal:

time, tranquility, nature, health and the opportunity to reconnect with oneself.

And that is precisely the idea behind:

“Healing is the New Luxury.”
