Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication that usually develops after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Its main characteristics include:
๐ Abnormally high blood pressure
๐ Protein in the urine
๐ Abnormal function of certain organs, such as the liver, kidneys, or brain
Warning Signs of Preeclampsia
Some pregnant women may not experience obvious symptoms. However, common warning signs include:
๐ Severe headache
๐ Blurred vision or seeing flashing lights
๐ Sudden or unusual swelling of the face, hands, or feet
๐ Tightness in the upper abdomen or pain beneath the right ribs
๐ Rapid weight gain over a short period
๐ Nausea or vomiting during the second half of pregnancy
How Serious Is Preeclampsia?
Without treatment, preeclampsia may progress and cause serious complications, including:
๐ Seizures, known as eclampsia
๐ Premature separation of the placenta
๐ Premature birth
๐ Serious risks to both the mother and the baby
Who Is at Higher Risk?
The risk of preeclampsia may be higher among women who:
๐ Are pregnant for the first time
๐ Have previously experienced preeclampsia
๐ Have underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or kidney disease
๐ Are pregnant with twins or multiple babies
๐ Are younger than 20 years old or older than 35 years old
Care and Treatment
Regular antenatal care is extremely important.
The doctor will:
๐ Monitor blood pressure
๐ Test the urine
๐ Assess symptoms and organ function
๐ Monitor the baby’s growth and well-being
Some patients may need to be admitted to hospital for close observation. In certain cases, the doctor may recommend delivery when it is considered safest for both the mother and the baby.
When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention
Pregnant women should seek medical attention immediately if they experience:
๐ A severe headache
๐ Blurred vision or flashing lights
๐ Sudden or significant swelling
๐ Tightness in the upper abdomen
๐ Pain beneath the right ribs
Careful observation of symptoms and regular antenatal check-ups can help reduce the risks associated with preeclampsia and support a safer pregnancy for both mother and baby.
