What Does the Liver Do?
1. Toxin Filtration and Metabolism: The liver acts as the body's detoxification plant by converting various toxins - such as alcohol, drugs, chemicals, and metabolic byproducts - into forms that can be easily excreted from the body via urine or stool.
2. Bile Production: The liver produces bile, a greenish-yellow fluid essential for fat digestion. Bile is stored in the gallbladder and released into the small intestine to aid in the digestion and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).
3. Blood Sugar Regulation: The liver stores glucose in the form of glycogen and releases it back into the bloodstream when the body needs energy to maintain stable blood sugar levels. Additionally, it can convert other nutrients, such as amino acids and fats, into glucose.
4. Production of Essential Proteins: The liver is a major site for producing crucial proteins, such as albumin, which helps maintain fluid balance in the body, and clotting factors, which are essential for stopping bleeding when injuries occur.
