A global lifestyle and travel magazine has ranked Bangkok, Thailand's capital, as the second-best city in the world for 2025, second only to Cape Town, South Africa.
The ranking, based on a survey of over 20,000 tourists worldwide, highlights Bangkok's rich culture, diverse cuisine, and the happiness of its residents as key factors that attract both locals and global visitors.
The survey gathered opinions from residents of cities across the globe, focusing on elements such as food, nightlife, culture, affordability, and overall city atmosphere. This year, livability played a crucial role in determining the rankings, emphasizing factors that make a city feel like home—safety, happiness, and a sense of belonging.
Bangkok excelled in happiness, with residents expressing contentment with their daily experiences. The city also stood out for affordability, with 84% of respondents stating that activities like dining out, enjoying coffee, or watching movies were reasonably priced and accessible. Additionally, 86% rated Bangkok's food as "good" or "excellent."
One urban expert described Bangkok as "unmatched in diversity," from aromatic street food to luxurious restaurants. The Chao Phraya River and world-renowned riverside hotels create a memorable atmosphere, while the city's parks, such as Benjakitti Park, provide essential green spaces.
Bangkok’s cultural heritage is another highlight, with intricate and awe-inspiring temples like Wat Arun, Wat Ratchabophit, and the Grand Palace reflecting the city’s rich history and artistry. The local food scene, including the bustling Chatuchak Market and Chinatown’s Yaowarat Road, remains unparalleled.
Additionally, Bangkok’s nightlife, featuring hotspots like Thonglor and Ekkamai, has earned international acclaim. Improved public transportation with expanded BTS and MRT lines has made exploring these attractions more convenient than ever.
Time Out noted that Bangkok is not only a top global destination for its friendly locals, vibrant street food, and lively nightlife but also for its exciting activities, arts festivals, and welcoming atmosphere.
Bangkok’s second-place ranking places it ahead of notable cities such as New York (3rd), Melbourne (4th), and London (5th). It also stands out as the best city in Asia, surpassing major hubs like Shanghai (9th), Hong Kong (14th), and Hanoi (21st).
With such recognition, Bangkok continues to establish itself as a global and regional leader in culture, tourism, and livability.
