Bangkok Named World’s Best City for Nightlife in 2026, Putting Thailand at the Top of the Global After-Dark Scene

Bangkok has been crowned the world’s best city for nightlife in 2026 by Time Out, rising from 13th place last year to take the No. 1 position ahead of Berlin, New York City, Melbourne and São Paulo. The recognition reinforces Thailand’s capital as a global destination where rooftop bars, live music, late-night dining, street culture and diverse entertainment come together long after sunset.

The ranking comes from Time Out’s Best Cities for Nightlife 2026 with Intrepid Travel, based on responses from more than 24,000 local residents across 150 cities worldwide, together with assessments from Time Out’s international network of editors and city experts.

Rather than judging cities solely on nightclubs and bars, the ranking examines the wider after-dark experience  including nightlife quality and affordability, opportunities to find community and connection, and whether a city feels exciting, lively, diverse, welcoming and safe at night.

The final ranking combines 70% local sentiment with 30% expert evaluation, according to Time Out’s methodology.

Bangkok Rises From No. 13 to No. 1

Bangkok’s rise is particularly notable. After ranking 13th in 2025, the Thai capital climbed to the top of the global list in 2026.

According to Time Out, 73% of Bangkok residents surveyed rated the city’s nightlife as “good” or “amazing.” The same proportion said it was easy to feel connected and find a sense of community in the city, while Time Out’s expert panel gave Bangkok a 95% approval score for its nightlife scene.

Bangkok was followed by Berlin in second place and New York City in third. Melbourne ranked fourth, while São Paulo completed the global top five.

The full Top 20 for 2026 comprises Bangkok, Berlin, New York City, Melbourne, São Paulo, Medellín, Johannesburg, Brighton, Beijing, Amsterdam, Porto, Hong Kong, Athens, Madrid, Hanoi, Seoul, Bengaluru, Accra, Singapore and Mexico City.

Why Bangkok Stands Out After Dark

What distinguishes Bangkok is the sheer variety of experiences available after sunset.

A night in the Thai capital can begin with sunset drinks overlooking the skyline from a rooftop bar, continue through an intimate cocktail venue or live music destination, and end with a plate of freshly prepared street food well after midnight.

Time Out highlighted Bangkok’s combination of rooftop bars, major clubs, neighbourhood cocktail spots, street-side nightlife, LGBTQ+ venues and late-night dining as part of what makes the city’s nightlife distinctive.

The experience also extends beyond individual venues. Areas such as Chinatown, Silom and Thonglor offer different interpretations of Bangkok after dark, from small bars hidden inside historic shophouses to entertainment districts, clubs and rooftop destinations.

Melbourne, São Paulo and Medellín demonstrate the strength of nightlife scenes across Australia and Latin America, while Beijing, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Seoul and Singapore give Asia a strong presence in the Top 20.

Time Out also deliberately limited the final list to the highest-ranked city from each country to ensure broader geographic representation.

Bangkok’s position at the top therefore places Thailand at the center of a global nightlife landscape that increasingly extends beyond traditional party capitals.
