Beijing — China’s National Nutrition and Health Steering Committee has released new dietary guidelines aimed at promoting healthier eating habits among the population and tackling the country’s growing obesity problem. The guidelines call for increased consumption of three main food categories: fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and aquatic products.

The guidelines emphasize the importance of including vegetables in every meal and consuming fruit daily. Specifically, adults are advised to eat at least 300 grams of fresh vegetables per day, with dark leafy greens accounting for more than half of that amount. Fresh fruit consumption should range between 200 to 350 grams per day.

It is stressed that fruits and vegetables are not interchangeable, as they each offer unique and essential nutrients. A balanced diet should therefore include both.

Whole grains—such as brown rice, oats, quinoa, and whole wheat—are highlighted as key sources of dietary fiber, B vitamins, and essential minerals. Adults are encouraged to consume 50 to 100 grams of whole grains daily, with at least one of the three main meals each day including whole grains to support adequate nutrient intake and digestive health.

For aquatic products, the focus is on fatty fish such as salmon, eel, and mackerel, which are rich in DHA, EPA, vitamin D, and vitamin A. Seaweeds like kelp, wakame, and laver are recommended for their iodine, vitamin K, and folate content, while shellfish contribute important nutrients like iron, zinc, iodine, and other essential minerals.

The guidelines recommend that adults consume 300 to 500 grams of fish, shrimp, and shellfish per week, divided into 1–2 meals. Increased intake of aquatic products is also advised for children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and the elderly.

These new nutrition guidelines come amid rising concerns over increasing obesity rates. Data from China’s National Health Commission shows that the combined rate of overweight and obesity among Chinese adults has reached 51.2 percent. Without intervention, this number could exceed 70 percent by 2030.
