The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Corrections to enhance skills and knowledge in Thai traditional massage and the use of medicinal herbs for inmates. The initiative aims to prepare incarcerated individuals for reintegration into society with improved quality of life and sustainable careers.

On July 14, 2025, a signing ceremony was held at the Department of Corrections Museum in Nonthaburi Province. The MOU focuses on developing vocational training in Thai traditional massage alongside promoting alternative healthcare services. Executives and witnesses from both departments, including directors of Thai traditional medicine centers, herbal medicine development divisions, and prison administrations, participated in the event.

This collaboration is intended to equip inmates with knowledge and practical skills in Thai traditional massage and herbal remedies, enabling them to pursue careers after release. It also aims to align vocational training with labor market needs, promote public acceptance of inmates' expertise, and increase access to traditional and herbal medicine services in the community. Ultimately, it serves to enhance the quality of life for former inmates and support their successful return to society.

According to representatives from the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, the government is actively promoting Thai massage as part of the country’s health economy and wellness tourism strategy. The department plays a crucial role in elevating the standards and quality of Thai massage and herbal products, which contributes to tourism, income generation, and national economic growth. Core responsibilities include developing training curricula, setting standards, and promoting knowledge about Thai massage.

As part of this collaboration, the department will provide vocational training in Thai massage and related fields, support research and academic development, and strengthen professional capabilities among inmates. Additional cooperative efforts will also be encouraged to expand the program.

A spokesperson concluded by stating:
"Thai massage is a profession and a health science that supports public well-being. Allowing inmates to learn and practice these skills is akin to planting the seeds of self-care, instilling hope, pride, and the ability to become self-reliant. This MOU marks a significant step in promoting vocational development and sustainably returning good citizens to society."
