Bangkok – As the rainy season sets in, medical professionals are warning parents of a surge in croup cases among young children. Characterized by a barking cough and breathing difficulties, the illness is now spreading rapidly in several areas, prompting pediatricians to advise parents on symptoms, complications, and when to seek urgent medical care.

According to a public health alert from the Facebook page Dr. Noi – The Family, the current outbreak of croup has taken many parents by surprise. “We didn’t expect it this time, but now many children are coming down with croup as the rainy season begins,” the page stated. “Parents should familiarize themselves with this illness to monitor their children closely.”

What is Croup?
Croup is an upper respiratory tract infection commonly found in children during the rainy or winter seasons. It is caused by inflammation of the larynx (voice box) and the upper trachea, leading to a hoarse voice and a distinctive barking cough. The condition is primarily caused by viral infections, especially Parainfluenza virus, but can also result from RSV, adenovirus, or influenza.

The virus spreads through airborne droplets from coughing and sneezing, or by touching contaminated surfaces.

Common Symptoms of Croup Include:

  • Barking cough resembling a dog’s bark

  • Noisy breathing or stridor when inhaling

  • Hoarseness or changes in voice

  • Low to moderate fever

  • Symptoms may begin with a common cold, progressing to a barking cough — especially at night

Potential Complications:
Health officials warn that if the airway becomes too inflamed, it may cause severe breathing difficulties. In critical cases, children may develop bluish lips, drowsiness, or become unresponsive — all of which require immediate hospital care.

Home Care Recommendations:
Parents are advised to:

  • Keep the child sitting upright to ease breathing

  • Use a humidifier or expose the child to warm steam from a bathroom to relieve airway obstruction

  • Administer fever medication as needed

  • Ensure the child stays hydrated and gets plenty of rest

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention:

  • Visible chest or neck retractions when breathing

  • Child becomes lethargic, refuses food or drink

  • Bluish lips, cold hands and feet

  • Persistent wheezing even while resting

Preventive Measures:
Doctors recommend frequent hand washing, avoiding crowded areas, not sharing utensils or toys, and boosting the child’s immune system through adequate rest and nutrition.

Though croup typically resolves on its own within 3–5 days, experts emphasize that early recognition and proper care are essential for preventing serious complications.
