Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a serious issue affecting millions of people worldwide. These diseases can spread quickly and pose a danger to communities, especially to close contacts.

Most patients with STDs tend to feel embarrassed, avoid consulting a doctor, and self-medicate, which can lead to further complications. This also causes them to miss the opportunity to receive early treatment, especially if the infection has recently entered their body.

What STDs Should You Be Aware Of?

Be cautious of diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, non-gonococcal urethritis, and AIDS (HIV). Some diseases show no symptoms and can only be detected through testing.

Symptoms That May Indicate an STD:

  • In women, symptoms may include lower abdominal pain, swollen groin, sores, itching in the genital area, rashes, blisters, or lesions around the genital area, yellow discharge with a foul odor.
  • In men, symptoms may include painful urination, swollen groin, sores, rashes, blisters around the genitals, mucus or pus-like discharge from the penis.

What to Do If You Have an STD:

  • Inform your sexual partner or close contacts to get tested.
  • Avoid sexual activity and masturbation.
  • Refrain from alcohol consumption.
  • Do not self-medicate as it may lead to drug resistance.
  • Keep the infected area dry and clean at all times.
  • Attend follow-up appointments and adhere to your doctor's advice.

For men, avoid manipulating the genital area before testing as it can cause inflammation. Also, hold urine for 4-6 hours before testing.

Early Detection and Treatment:

Be aware of STDs, get tested early, and receive timely treatment. Those at risk or suspecting an STD should get a specialized health check-up to reduce risks and prevent complications.

Health Checks Before Marriage:

  • For couples, getting tested before marriage can prevent the transmission of diseases to one another.
  • Hidden infections, such as syphilis, hepatitis B, HIV, and AIDS, may only be detected through blood tests.

* Prevent transmission to loved ones: Regular health checks help prevent the transmission of infections such as syphilis and hepatitis B.
* For new parents: Ensuring the health of both parents before and after pregnancy helps safeguard the baby's health.
* Genetic transmission: Some STDs can be passed on genetically. Pre-marital health checks help assess the safety of future children.
* Infertility risks: Early detection helps couples identify if they are at risk of infertility.
