New York, — The Washington Post reported that although numerous studies have linked high consumption of ultra-processed foods — such as frozen pizza — to an increased risk of chronic diseases, health experts do not recommend completely avoiding these foods. Instead, they advise consuming them in moderation.
The report noted that ultra-processed foods make up about 70% of all food products sold in grocery stores across the United States. Their popularity stems from their great taste, convenience, and affordability. However, experts emphasize that not all processed foods are created equal, and including some in your diet does not necessarily harm your health.
For example, an analysis of various frozen pizza brands found that some use basic ingredients like wheat flour, tomato sauce, olive oil, garlic powder, and mozzarella cheese. In contrast, others are loaded with preservatives, artificial flavors, emulsifiers, and synthetic additives — resulting in ingredient lists that resemble a high school chemistry experiment.
The report also quoted nutritionists who advise against eating frozen pizza daily. However, they say it can occasionally be part of a healthy lunch or dinner. The key is to choose higher-quality brands and pair the pizza with a balanced selection of other foods — such as broccoli, carrots, or cucumbers. You could also add a boiled egg and finish with fresh fruit, walnuts, or mixed nuts to create a more nutritionally complete meal.
