The woman was among five French nationals evacuated from the vessel and flown back to France on Sunday. According to reports, she began showing symptoms during the repatriation flight before her condition worsened overnight. She has since been transferred to a specialized infectious disease hospital for treatment.
French authorities have identified 22 people who had close contact with the infected patient. All have been ordered to undergo quarantine as a precautionary measure.
The case follows growing international concern over the hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship, which has prompted health authorities in multiple countries to monitor passengers and implement containment measures.
