The National Cancer Institute, under the Department of Medical Services, has made history in Thailand’s healthcare sector after being named one of the “Best Specialized Hospitals Asia-Pacific 2025” by Newsweek magazine. This marks the first time that a cancer-specialized hospital under Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health has received this prestigious international recognition.

This achievement reflects Thailand’s commitment to elevating healthcare services to international standards, in line with national policies aimed at improving quality of life and positioning the country as a regional medical hub. The Department of Medical Services has been driving advancements in medical technology, staff training, and innovative research to enhance service quality and safety across its affiliated hospitals. The inclusion of the National Cancer Institute in this global ranking underscores its progress and excellence as a leading specialized hospital recognized worldwide, while also highlighting Thailand’s dedication to advancing its healthcare system.

The Best Specialized Hospitals Asia-Pacific ranking by Newsweek and Statista is based on three main criteria:

  • Reputation Score – determined through an online survey of medical experts and healthcare professionals across the region.

  • Certifications – assessment of international accreditations received.

  • Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) – feedback from patients reflecting the quality of care from their own experiences.

  • The National Cancer Institute provides state-of-the-art cancer care by multidisciplinary teams of specialists, serving approximately 50,000 patients annually, totaling over 270,000 visits each year. It continues to develop innovative treatment models to deliver comprehensive and holistic care, such as:

    • Advanced nuclear-based therapy for advanced liver cancer, which enhances cure rates and reduces side effects.

    • CyberKnife radiosurgery as a non-invasive alternative to traditional surgery.

    • Evidence-based integrative care, including the use of aloe vera extracts from the Government Pharmaceutical Organization to support patients undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

In addition to treatment, the institute serves as a center for cancer education, research, and training for medical professionals both domestically and internationally. It also collaborates with national health agencies and organizations to improve benefit packages, service standards, cost analysis, and the overall efficiency of cancer care systems in Thailand.

This recognition reinforces the National Cancer Institute’s role as a center of excellence, not only in delivering high-quality cancer treatment and patient care but also as a model institution inspiring other hospitals to enhance and expand their own services.
