Canberra — The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released initial data from the National Health Measures Survey, conducted between 2022 and 2024, revealing that 6.6% of Australian adults have diabetes, up from 5.1% in 2011-2012.

This figure reflects a 29.4% increase in diabetes prevalence among Australian adults over the past 12 years.

The survey, which collected biological samples from participants aged five and older across Australia, also found that an additional 2.7% of Australian adults are at high risk of developing diabetes. Men were found to be more likely than women to have diabetes across all age groups. Meanwhile, James Mawless, head of public health statistics at the bureau, stated that adults living in the most disadvantaged areas are more likely to have diabetes than those in less disadvantaged areas.

A study supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and published in The Lancet in November 2024 reported that global diabetes prevalence among adults rose from 7% to 14% between 1990 and 2022.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern over the rising diabetes rates and urged countries to take urgent action to curb the global diabetes epidemic.

A separate report published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in December 2024 estimated that 5.1% of Australians—more than 1.3 million people—were living with diabetes in 2021. The number of diabetes cases in Australia has nearly tripled between 2000 and 2021.
