Male Vasectomy Sterilization

Male Vasectomy Sterilization

Complete service information and details

Description

Vasectomy is a form of permanent male sterilization. It's a surgical procedure where the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra, are sealed off. This procedure prevents sperm from reaching the semen that is ejaculated from the penis. An egg cannot be fertilized when there are no sperm in the semen. The body still produces sperm, but the sperm are reabsorbed by the body.

Here's how the procedure typically works:

  • A local anesthetic is applied to numb the testicles.

  • The surgeon makes one or two small openings in the skin of the scrotum, which has been numbed.

  • The vas deferens are cut, tied, or otherwise sealed.

  • The openings in the scrotum are stitched closed.

  • The procedure usually takes about 10 to 30 minutes and can be performed in an outpatient setting.

While the goal of a vasectomy is permanent sterilization, there have been attempts to make the procedure reversible, with varying success.

While vasectomies are considered very safe procedures, they are not without risks. These may include:

  • Minor pain in the surgical area.

  • Swelling of the testicles.

  • Infection or inflammation at the site of the incision.

  • Hematoma or bleeding inside the scrotum. This can become serious if left untreated but is rare when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon.

  • Sperm granuloma, which is a hard, sometimes painful lump about the size of a pea that may form as a result of sperm leakage from the cut vas deferens. The condition is usually not serious.

Most of these potential complications are minor and treatable. It's important to have a discussion with a healthcare provider about the potential risks and benefits before making a decision about vasectomy.

Overview

Vasectomy is a permanent male sterilization procedure involving the sealing of vas deferens to prevent sperm from reaching semen. It is usually performed under local anesthetic in an outpatient setting. While generally safe, risks include pain, swelling, infection, and hematoma, but complications are mostly minor and manageable.
