PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

Complete service information and details

Description

PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

What is PESA?

PESA is a minimally invasive sperm retrieval procedure often recommended for men with a blockage in the sperm ducts or in cases where ejaculation is not possible.

A fine needle is inserted through the skin of the scrotum into the epididymis to aspirate fluid, which is then examined for sperm. If viable sperm are found, they can be used for ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) to achieve fertilization.

Key Benefits of PESA

  • No major surgery required

  • Only a very small puncture, with minimal scarring

  • Quick procedure with mild discomfort

  • Suitable for men with normal sperm production but obstructed ducts

TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration)

What is TESA?

TESA is a sperm retrieval technique used when no sperm are present in the ejaculate due to very low sperm production or severe obstruction.

During TESA, a fine needle is inserted directly into the testis to extract a small tissue sample. This tissue is examined under a microscope to identify viable sperm, which can then be used for ICSI.

Key Benefits of TESA

  • Effective for men with obstructive azoospermia (normal sperm production, but blocked ducts)

  • Minimally invasive with only a small puncture site

  • Typically causes only mild discomfort

  • Provides an effective option when ejaculation or epididymal aspiration is not possible

Summary

  • PESA is best for men with normal sperm production but blocked sperm ducts.

  • TESA is suited for men with obstructive azoospermia or very low sperm counts.

  • Both techniques are safe, minimally invasive, and effective in retrieving sperm for use in ICSI, helping couples achieve fertilization and pregnancy

Overview

PESA and TESA are minimally invasive sperm retrieval techniques. PESA is ideal for men with normal sperm production but blocked ducts, while TESA suits those with obstructive azoospermia or low sperm counts. Both methods aid in retrieving sperm for ICSI to facilitate fertilization and pregnancy.
