Siriraj Sappaya-sthana for Health Promotion

Siriraj Applied Thai Traditional Medicine is dedicated to preserving, developing, and advancing Thai Traditional Medicine as a valuable national heritage. The field brings together traditional theories, principles, healthcare practices, herbal medicine, and therapeutic wisdom that have been passed down through generations, while also developing these bodies of knowledge to meet modern standards in education, healthcare services, research, and public health.

The organization has its roots in the long-standing effort to revive and promote Thai Traditional Medicine, beginning with the establishment of the Foundation for the Restoration and Promotion of Traditional Thai Medicine under royal patronage in 1980 by Professor Dr. Ouay Ketusingh. Over time, its work expanded into formal education, clinical services, herbal medicine production, and academic development. In 2003, the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, accepted the transfer of the school and established it as an academic unit equivalent to a department under the name “Siriraj Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine.”

Siriraj Applied Thai Traditional Medicine provides education and healthcare services across the four core branches of Thai Traditional Medicine: Thai traditional diagnosis and treatment, Thai traditional pharmacy, Thai traditional therapeutic massage, and Thai traditional midwifery. The center is especially recognized for its expertise in court-type Thai traditional massage and the integration of traditional knowledge with professional healthcare practice.

Today, Siriraj Applied Thai Traditional Medicine continues to play a significant role in strengthening Thai Traditional Medicine within the national healthcare system. Its missions cover education, clinical services, herbal medicine and product manufacturing, herbal product analysis, research development, collaborative networks, and the preservation of Thai arts and culture. Since 2018, the center has also been designated as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicine in Thailand, reflecting its growing role in advancing traditional, complementary, and integrated medicine at both national and international levels.
