Bangkok, May 18, 2025 – The Ministry of Public Health has raised concerns over rising health risks among Bangkok residents, revealing that 56.1% are living with abdominal obesity and 12.5% have diabetes—figures significantly higher than the national averages of 39.4% and 9.5% respectively. These alarming statistics were shared during the event “Thais Stay Away from NCDs through Urban Lifestyles,” held at The Graf Hotel in Bangkok and chaired by Public Health Minister Mr. Somsak Thepsutin.

Minister Somsak emphasized that the Ministry is prioritizing the fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer, by designating them as a national agenda. These chronic diseases not only strain the country’s healthcare system but also severely impact citizens’ quality of life and hinder economic and social development. The economic loss associated with NCDs is estimated to be as high as 1.6 trillion baht per year.

He noted that the urban lifestyle in Bangkok—characterized by a fast-paced rhythm and high levels of stress—contributes significantly to the rising prevalence of these conditions. In response, the Ministry has been equipping public health volunteers (Or Sor Sor) with the knowledge and tools to become community health leaders, with the goal of encouraging behavior change and raising awareness among Bangkok residents.

The event featured a series of special lectures, educational exhibitions, and demonstrations focused on urban disease prevention strategies. These included models for health promotion in housing estates and high-rise communities, community-based disease control efforts, strategies for sodium reduction, low-carb diet options, and free influenza vaccinations.

The Ministry of Public Health reiterated its commitment to supporting urban populations in building healthier habits and reducing the long-term burden of NCDs. The event served as a platform to promote collaboration and proactive health management tailored to the unique challenges of life in the capital.
