Beijing, (Xinhua) — A memorandum of understanding for a three-year cooperation on air quality monitoring and management—recently signed by China’s Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Environment Department—states that Beijing will share its practices in combating air pollution with its sister city, Bangkok.

The memorandum specifies that Beijing will share its approaches to managing air pollution with Bangkok, particularly focusing on monitoring and reducing PM2.5 (fine particulate matter). The cooperation will also facilitate mutual visits, organize training sessions, and support Bangkok in implementing various pilot projects.

This collaboration comes on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Thailand.

China’s capital has significantly improved its air quality after years of implementing air pollution control initiatives. In 2024, the average concentration of PM2.5 reached 30.5 micrograms per cubic meter, meeting the national standards for four consecutive years.

Furthermore, the annual average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide in Beijing in 2024 decreased by 65.9%, 50%, 57.1%, and 88.7%, respectively, compared to 2013.
