The levels of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) in Bangkok are increasing, which may have adverse effects on public health. Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital, under the Department of Medical Services, has provided recommendations for alleviating symptoms caused by exposure to PM 2.5.

To relieve cough and sore throat symptoms, it is advised to avoid exposure to dust both indoors and outdoors. Spicy, fried, and oily foods should be avoided. Drinking warm water, ginger tea, or lemon juice mixed with honey can help. Consuming sour fruits such as lemons and Indian gooseberries, as well as using herbal remedies like ginger rhizomes, long pepper, pineapples, dried plums, and solanum trilobatum, may help relieve symptoms. Cough drops or herbal lozenges can soothe the throat. Gargling with warm salt water and getting adequate rest are also recommended.

For skin symptoms, people with existing skin conditions should avoid exposure to dust. Using mild soap for cleansing and applying moisturizer can help maintain skin hydration. Scratching or peeling the skin should be avoided, and protective clothing should be worn when going outside. If allergic reactions occur, consulting a doctor for antihistamines or steroid creams is advisable.

To relieve eye symptoms, wearing sunglasses or dust-proof glasses when going outside is recommended. Blinking frequently can help remove dust particles from the eyes. It is best to avoid rubbing the eyes or touching them with objects. Using artificial tears or rinsing the eyes with saline solution or clean water can reduce irritation.

For individuals with severe symptoms, Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital offers telemedicine consultations. Doctors can provide medical advice and prescribe medications that will be delivered to the patient’s home. If an in-person visit is necessary, an appointment will be arranged at a nearby hospital.

Some areas in Bangkok have high levels of PM 2.5, which may begin to impact health. People are advised to wear PM 2.5 protective masks when going outside and limit the time spent on strenuous outdoor activities. If symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, or eye irritation occur, seeking medical advice promptly is recommended.

As of 07:00 AM, the average PM 2.5 level in Bangkok is reported to be 40.7 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³).
